    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem

It's like what happened 9 years ago, but this time... it's 30 years from now. Think of the children!

Technically, yes, but in reality Unix is powerful enough that instead of crashing, the computers will just beam themselves back to 1901, where they will power down from a lack of electricity.

I think by then we'll *probably* have time to move everything over to 128 or 256 bit date/time formats.

If 30 years from now your elevator controller stops working... well, first of all, who programs an elevator controller to care what date it is? And second, take the damn stairs.

I'm pretty sure I'll be dead by then, so this is no concern to me. Just like that thing with the ice caps and the polar bears.

I'm more concerned about Y2k12, to be honest.

Also, while we're talking about years, where's my suicide booth?

The first time it passes its gonna be a "near" miss. They don't know what will happen on its return pass in 2035. Its possible it could hit. Note: Possible here means 1 in 5 million chance as opposed to the usual 1 in 500 decillion.
They say by 2015 we'll know if it will hit in 2035 on its second pass.
