Re: Iraq as a 51st state

Costa Rica? How about that one? It seems peaceful, I like the name, and it probably still has some real rain forest left.

    51st state? Yes?

(What?! It's a real country? Well, the U.S. Military can fix that...)

Yup, except for Ricky Martin starting his career here in mx we have absolutely nothing to do with Puerto Rico.

      And now some fun facts:

      - Being a third world country Mexico has many poor

      - Most of the population doesn't even think about moving to the US, specially not impressed with the part about raising a family in that environment (of course it's a generalization, but that's the way most people see it over here).

      - Only desperate people and people who can't make a decent living here tries to work illegaly in the US. (Did I mention we have many poor?)

      - So in reality the US (and border cities) gets the worst from mexico in the way of illegal immigrants. All the decent people is too busy working and making a life here to bother thinking about the "american dream", simply because to us that's more like a "US nightmare" really.

And I think that's about it.

I dunno. The American Dream is actually pretty awesome.

Thanks, Raydeus; I enjoy seeing the border from the other side. ^_^ (This may be the first time I've heard how Mexicans sees U.S. lol.)

Would you really consider Raydeus to be indicative of most Mexicans? Or insightful enough to have his finger on the pulse of how people around him really feel?

It's a view. I didn't necessarily believe all Mexico think that way, but it does sound plausible many of his countrymen feels that way.

Give me a little credit. D: (I have met and worked with people from other countries before; some of the things he wrote sound quite typical, really.)

I've met and worked with people from other countries as well. Generally the view I've seen is that while we're not perfect by any stretch (what country is? - though I'm rather fond of The Netherlands and Norway), the amount of raw opportunity that we have in America is one of the things that many non-Americans appreciate. Of course, that's a skewed view too, in many ways. But still, it's what I've personally seen. Most people who have actually visited have found the experience to be pleasant. Those that read about us on the internet, or see us on the news? Not so much.

Not that Raydeus isn't allowed to have his own take. I was just questioning whether it had any basis outside his own meager experience.
