Iraq as a 51st state

I haven't really considered this myself, but I came across http://www.our51ststate.com/?page_id=5 , and it's actually somewhat interesting.


There are a lot of reasons this would be a bad thing, as well as reasons it would be a good thing. I'd like to see what some of you think about it.

My U.S. history is poor, but I think at least California and Hawaii were states added after military aggression on the part of our country? Actually, given the presence of Indian nations before European settlers, it seems pretty easy to argue that U.S. has a long history of territorial expansion via armed conquests.

Iraq would be just more of the same, if (in the unlikely event) it goes that route. Certainly would be more dignified than, say, Guam, an occupied territory but without the recognition or rights of statehood.

It doesn't matter if it's tongue-in-cheek, it doesn't detract from the idea itself, which is at the very least interesting.

You keep saying that it's interesting, but are unable to elaborate as to why. Why on earth should anyone agree with you if the only thing you can say is "it's interesting?"

And the fact that it is a joke should basically detract from any serious take on it.

You can make jokes about anything, that doesn't make the subject itself a joke. If I said "Maybe we should put people in tiny little boxes as punishment for crimes!" I could very well be joking-- that doesn't mean that we should dissolve the prison system.

I'm not sure what the hell you're expecting anyone to "agree" with me on, except that it is an interesting idea. It clearly is-- it would get us out of the war, in some ways, it would give us a very strong presence in the middle east... and we'd effectively have a civil war on our hands. It's full of pros and cons-- I don't think it's seriously worth pushing for, but it's an interesting idea just to think about.

Your first mistake is thinking that I expect anything. You're the one who is taking issue with the fact that I don't agree with you that it's interesting.
