The problem with that theory TGM, is that it makes sense. Perfect sense.
And as I am fond of saying: Nothing that makes sense gets done.
It's a shame, too.

The thing that bothers me are the ages of some of our presidential candidates. I'm the same age as Barrack and I already know how age has affected me mentally. Then I see that at least 3 candidates are 70+ and one of them is even older than my mother!! WTF!?
Just look at our ex PM, Tony Blair as the prime minister had a few scares with his heart from the stress and strain of the job and he was only in his 50's. Sir Ming cambell ex Liberal democrat party leader was in his late 60's early 70's and he did obismally in teh polls due to his age and "traditional thinking".
In todays modern world the old ways wont work, yet the older politions think thats the only way which is their achelies heel.
If the US gets another old ways politition interested in what he is used to (and not change) as well as their own business interests (hint Bush, oil *cough*) their is going to be more trouble.
To have a predisdent of your country with the ability to end the world, you want to make sure that they don't loose their mind or go senile.
You might have to be 35+ to run for president but there should be an age cap too. I'd say 65 tops but I'd like to see 60. There are a lot of great elderly people out there and I respect them a lot but I'd just rather see someone younger leading my country. And for God's sake set an I.Q. standard too! They should have to take an I.Q. test and it should center around pertinent information.
I'll have to go with Ronald Regans answer to this one when asked if he was too old to run. "I won't hold my opponents youth and inexperience against him"
In all seriousness some people go downhill at 50 while others stay sharp till the day they die. Largely it's a combination of luck, genetics, and how well you take care of yourself. If I think a canadates mind is going I don't vote for him. (Unless the other looks even worse off). The IQ test is a cute idea, but they don't measure common sense which is what I'm more woried about a world leader lacking. What I like to call an inteligent idiot high IQ, but lacking a grasp of the obvious.
Anyone else think that Mr. "Hybrid Army" (-.- honestly still can't believe he said that @ one of the republican debates) looks god awful (like he'll drop of a heart attack at any second) now compared to when he was sworn in as Mayor of New York?
I *really* hope that after tonight, Barrack comes in on top with Edwards in 2nd.
I'm not an American (yet! Born in Canada but Dad is a US citizen and I plan to move some day ^^) however I do take high interest in your (some day our ^^) politics and it's something of an odd stance, but if Barrack fails my 2nd choice would probably be Huccabe (sp?)
Different view points and values, but those two seem to be on the same page (Change)

You make it sound like the purpose of government is to change things.

Five years after leaving office Mr. Reagan announced he had Alzheimer's. Do you believe that you just wake up one day with Alzheimer's? Mr. Reagan had this genetic disease while in office and it effected his daily decisions. Of course, he had an entire staff of people to keep him on his toes or cover up his lapses. I am not talking about the man's service to this country. I'm talking about him as an elderly person and his health. He was 69ish when he became president and 77ish when he left office. He was experiencing dementia/Alzheimer's while in office without a doubt. A man with that much influence with decreased mental capacity in charge of billions of people's lives. Doesn't that scare you even a little bit?

Luck? Oh what the hell, let's just hope we get lucky with this old fart! {No, thanks!} Genetics? Well we'll never see a law where you have to be genetically tested before entering any political office thats for sure!! There has been so much inbreeding in the "upper crust" that runs this country that nearly every single top end politician would fail it! LOLOLOLOLOL And as for taking care of yourself, you have to start that when you are young and carry it through till you are older. I know this for FACT! How many people actually do that? So here's to hoping that some elderly politician has luck, good genetics, and common sense to not abuse their body....that's really a long shot. Why would we want to take that risk?
Since it really doesn't matter who the individual 'running' a country is, who cares what kind of shape they're in or if they die while holding office.
The individual is a face to a group of people. You could have a 12 year old be president of a major democratic country as long as he listened and did as he was told.
Actually Malacite, unless you rejected it somehow, you likely are legally an American citizen. The US pretty much says it's laws always apply to it's citizens, last I checked, which means if they have a kid overseas, it's still an American citizen.
If you lived in a US county for six months you'd probably have all the qualifications it would take to vote. Not that it really matters, here.

But surely the public face should be someone people can trust, see as a strong leader and be highly confident, intelligent etc. things I'm sure people would not say Bush and Raegan are/were!. Its that image which dictates the peoples response to their countries leader (no matter how big the team behind them pulling stings is)

If you're born outside the US you have to petition for naturalization. It isn't simply granted.

The only thing this shows is how irrelevant voting is, how stupid people are and how easy it is to influence stupid people. "The President/Prime Minister doesn't do anything but act as a talking head, as long as that head is attractive and doesn't drool on itself the country is in good shape."
