Once you hit High School in Louisiana they stop teaching spelling and most grammar and your "English" class is suddenly 99% literature.
Wow. That's the same way back in Pennsylvania and here in Virgina.

It's that way across the US and Canada. Lets also not forget that Spelling and Grammar were taught in such a way that you learned that weeks lesson, wrote the test and never thought about it again.

Really, it's amazing anyone can read at all.

Oh, and 'Literature.' English classes should be presented as 20% Shakespeare 80% shit on a page.

I never agree when people say this, how does one get "tired" of using proper grammar and spelling once you've learned it? In my desired field, its not so much about having supervisors jump on you as its about a loss of credibility on your part.

But then, I could perfect my story or article down to the letter and some copy editor usually manages to fuck it up for me.

The only grammar nitpick that bothers me is those people that obsess about the use of contractions. You cannot tell me "Don't use contractions" and expect me to take you seriously. I snickered when teachers in high school would say that.

          Re: Commonly confused words test

Growing tired of it depends on what you do for a living. Someone who writes or has a position that requires formal writing as part of their job is probably either naturally good at spelling and grammar or has spent so much time focusing on being correct that it comes naturally to them. This alleviates a lot of the 'stress' of following the queens english.

However, if formal writing is an unfortunate side effect to your job and not really all that important to it, then suddenly having to be aware of every little problem that has crept into your use of the language causes you no end of irritation.

Just like with myself, at the end of the day the last thing I want to do is fix someone else's systems. It doesn't matter that I know what to do or that it would probably only take a moment, I just don't want to do it for someone else.

There's of course also the thing that bosses that blow everything out of proportion just make work much more tiring.

                  Copy and paste results:

                  Your Score: Very Literate

You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 73% Advanced, and 80% Expert!

You have a very good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and expert level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three level's questions correct. You didn't get as many of the advanced level questions correct, but don't fret. This is a great score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don't use them properly. You got a very respectable score. Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!

I think they do that in English everywhere ... at least, there was a lot less learning about the language and a lot more "what does this story really mean?" when I reached high school (though it was a while ago).

Oh, and as for the test ... "You scored 92% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 86% Expert!"
