  • Gender-specific Colors

I saw something like this in another forum and thought it was sort of interesting.

A male toddler wanted wanted a pink chair that he saw in the mall with his mother. There was no blue colors or any other colors of the chair, but the toddler still liked the pink chair. The mother refused to buy the pink chair for her little boy simply because it was pink. Another mother (I'll call her mother2) with her little boy heard what mother1 said. Mother2 asked her why she wouldn't buy it (although, I myself wouldn't care to jump in a conversation between a little boy and a mother that you don't know). Mother1 said "Pink is a girls-only color and I will not have my child with one spot of pink in his room." Mother2 said she'd buy it for her son if it makes her son happy. Then, Mother1 left.

So basically I'll break this down to some questions.

    1. Do you think pink is a girl color and blue is a boy color?
    2. If a baby boy was born with a little pink outfit on, on first sight would you think it was a girl?
    3. If a baby girl was born with a little blue outfit on, on first sight would you think it was a boy?
    4. Do you think a girl can wear any color while boys are restricted?
    5. Would you buy any color for your boy/son if he/she wanted it?

Aaliyah is more than a woman and she graduated with a 4.0 GPA (she only had 1 "C" grade ever in her life).

I bolded and underlined the "is" just for you, Malacite.

    Re: Gender-specific Colors

    1. Pink/Blue associates Girl/Boy cause that is the way we were raised.

    2. Yes i would think a baby wearing a pink outfit represented a girl. /em would slap the parent for being offended if i was mistaken.

    3. With blue i would not be sure usually the blue newborns wear is a light blue that can more of a feminine color anyway.

    4. I do think girls can wear any color easier, but so can't guys. Hopefully they are comfortable with their sexuality though because people are going to talk more about a guy wearing pink or purple as apposed to a female wearing any color really. I believe that colors are all feminine. Some are for girls only and others for both sexes.

    5. I was raised with the belief that women and men were made for each other, and though i mean no offense to anyone's life decisions i would hope my children grew up the same as i did. Having said that though i would not interfere with the decisions they chose to make. If my son wanted a pink chair as a child let him have it, or if he wants pink shorts be my guest. Today's society would turn him against it anyway. The first time his friends or other kids laughed at him for it, that would end that spree anyhow. And as for a girl again i just think all colors have a feminine side we don't think about a female wearing blue like we think about a guy wearing pink.

That s all i have to say. lmao. Thank you that was fun.

      Re: Gender-specific Colors

      1. Do you think pink is a girl color and blue is a boy color?
Absolutely not. Colours do not represent gender, they represent light bouncing off a surface. In addition, pink used to be the color boys wore, and blue the colors girls wore, I believe the reason being that the coloring used in children's clothing was a cheaper/weakened form of the coloring used on adult clothing, where red was more masculine. Why the polarity flipped I don't know, but colors assigned to a gender are an arbitrary thing which changes with culture.

      2. If a baby boy was born with a little pink outfit on, on first sight would you think it was a girl?
I'd wonder who the hell dressed it in the womb. If I saw a baby in pink clothing, I'd assume it was a female, just because that's the common way to dress children, but at that age gender is extremely irrelevant.

      3. If a baby girl was born with a little blue outfit on, on first sight would you think it was a boy?
Same as above, although girls wearing blue is more common than boys in pink.

      4. Do you think a girl can wear any color while boys are restricted?
Not at all. Then again, most of my dress shirts when I was a kid were 'peach', so I might be biased. It matched my skin though, apparently. Again, I don't think colors represent gender at all, so it doesn't bother me. What does bother me is colors that are just ass-ugly to begin with (I'm looking at you, lime green)

      5. Would you buy any color for your boy/son if he/she wanted it?
As long as it wasn't one of the aforementioned ass-ugly colors, sure, I don't see why not.
      ------------------------------------------
Simply put, I'd be more concerned with how said chair would look where it's going to be placed, not what color it is.

        Re: Gender-specific Colors

        1. As Feba said, Pink is a color that used to be associated with boys. Yes, we are generally raised with the idea that Pink = Girl, and Blue = Boy, but that doesn't mean that we have to hold onto it for the rest of our lives.

        2. I can't tell boy and girl babies apart regardless (except that girl babies sometimes have that stupid head thing on), so I wouldn't assume.

        3. See above.

        4. I think anyone can wear any color that pleases them. What other people have to say about the color you are wearing is irrelevant.

        5. Yes.

Lime green works in the right context. Really, most any color does.

Haha, I wonder what Balfree would say. Nonetheless, I still wholeheartedly agree.

Yellow is the true color of win.

Cyan and Orange are close runner-ups, however.

                  Re: Gender-specific Colors

Yellow is a girl's color. If you dress your son up in pink I might be inclined to make fun of him, and make him cry. I'll be sure to buy a dress for him on his next birthday.

All of my children will be wearing red and white. Nothing says this kid is ready to jump out of his stroller and kick your ass like red and white.

                    Re: Gender-specific Colors

I think I'd be more likely to think that a baby boy in a pink outfit was a girl than to think a baby girl in a blue outfit was a boy, for some reason. Not sure why.. I don;t think the colors are as gender specific for people as they get older, a lot of guys wear pink or peach colored shirts and look pretty good in them. But, I'm pretty sure I'd feel odd about buying a pink toy for a boy toddler. I can't say that I would..

                        1. Do you think pink is a girl color and blue is a boy color?

No. Pink is in. Both men and women use it.

                        2. If a baby boy was born with a little pink outfit on, on first sight would you think it was a girl?

Babies are androgenous. I wouldnt jump to conclusions but perhaps it could cross my mind that the baby is a girl.

                        3. If a baby girl was born with a little blue outfit on, on first sight would you think it was a boy?

                        No.

                        4. Do you think a girl can wear any color while boys are restricted?

                        Nope.

                        5. Would you buy any color for your boy/son if he/she wanted it?

                        Yea.
