  • Your real life HUD.

Well it seems like video games have HUDs in many situations where they wouldn't be realistic, or even useful, but what would your HUD be in real life?

Assume that it can NOT use a camera to augment reality in anyway, like identifying people or symbols. Also assume that it is not interactive in any way while it is being worn. Assume that otherwise, it can do whatever a cell phone or PDA could.

Basically, assume that you had floating, see through screens, in front of you 24/7, except they aren't actually there.

    Personally,

Top right corner: clock, about the size and distance of my hand held sideways, as far as my arm will reach to the side while keeping the hand in vision.

Middle right: barebones weather information; kept simple so it doesn't get in the way. Temperature, current conditions, and where the forecast is for only. This would be tied to informaton from..

Upper left corner: GPS information. Two small lines with the precise coordinates in them, below that a map (again, simplified drawing so it doesn't take up too much space) like any other GPS device.

Bottom (full width): message bar. Would give recent headlines, as well as adding new lines whenever an email was received.

So, what would yours look like? Bonus points for mockup pictures.

I don't know that I've ever given my life as a video game (or even with just a video game HUD) much thought.

Let me rephrase. I'm not sure that I'm interested in giving my life as a video game much thought. Real life is so much more rewarding than a game anyway.

I would pretty much use the same HUD as XI.

I really like it except for some minor tweaks, like making the compass visible at all times (instead of dissapearing when you call the menu).

Also depending on the resolution available I'd add more information windows as long as they didn't obstruct my vission and I'd add a mini-map window + a translucent full screen map (which is the feature I think I'd use the most).

A soliton radar feature for the minimap would be a must.

However not having on-screen targetting info would suck. Just fixing your view onto something and getting info about it would be awesome.

              .... Yeah. That's the stuff.

At least this reminds me to go install Photoshop.

That's nice. I'm talking about what I'm talking about. What everyone else is talking about is of little consequence.

                        Re: Your real life HUD.

For me it would all have to be completely collapsible, much like the movie Stranger Than Fiction. In the beginning of the movie, Will Ferrel's character had a GUI for everything he did. Everything organized, and completely collapsible so nobody else could see it.

In the GUI, I would have a calendar with to-do list, an RSS reader ( my Google Reader), map applet would be a must, MP3 player, and email. The video that StarvingArtist posted had a good idea of how it would behave. Could call up a "web browser" to gather the info I need, and then move it out of view when I don't need it. Imagine the smart asses something like this would create in the world. Create a personal Wiki for yourself with all the useless stuff you may not even have to remember, but can just call up the information at will. Wiki'n things on the fly, correcting everything anybody says. *sigh* lol

                          Re: Your real life HUD.

Mine, i'd go for a style mixed of GitS, StarTrek Voy and a few twists of my own for the design layout.

Sight would be a red tint during the day and invert during the night.

Bottom right corner would be a GitS style window holding the time and date. Time in 24 hour format, and date in YYYYMM.DD format.

Bottom left corner would be a ffxi style compass, in a Star Fleet style box.

Top right has a StarFleet styled menu listing, Music, Record Video, Snapshot, Sleep mode, video calling, Settings.

Top left in GitS style that shows what is active, whether mp3 playing, snapshot preview/save, video play back or video calling.

Top center displays a mini webbroswer, starflet style window.

Middle left shows tempature, lat + long position and a random on call counter/counter-down.

Actually, I do have a personal Wiki, although I haven't updated it in forever. You should look up personal wiki software, there's quite a bit out there.
