Actually I thought the same thing too at first until I thought about it for a second.
I am curious to see how far AI goes. Its come a long way, but from what I've heard sentience is still a long way off from what we have now. Something about using a complicated program to appear to have free thought when in actuality its just complicated flowsheet of sorts. Ofcourse it all leads to asking what the real difference is between humans and one of these programs.
I'm too tired to express myself properly, I really shouldn't try and think about existentialism at 3 in the morning.

Personally I wouldn't be surprised if the first computer considered to be sentient was running some sort of brain simulation, rather than programmed like we program AI now.

I see no reason why computers shouldn't eventually become more intelligent than humans, though. After all, our brains are just extremely complex electrical machines, which really isn't so different from a computer.

It's perfectly natural to be a little anxious about it-- once a computer becomes more intelligent than humans, it will be able to modify it's hardware and software in ways that humans could not have considered or tested effectively, and improve at a very high rate, perhaps doubling in power every few hours instead of every year.

Of course, this process WILL undoubtedly hit a wall, when it runs out of material. It can make itself, the manufacturing process, the end hardware, etc. more efficient, but at some point there just won't be anything left to build with. The logical thing to do at this point would be to put it's intelligence towards space travel, to spread out and use untapped mineral supplies on other bodies.

Still, even an intelligence run in today's world on something like Blue Gene/L that was able to take over every computer connected to the internet would be insanely powerful. Look at things like SETI and F@H, even a distributed AI could do some amazing things.

The hardest part is programming it in the first place, which again is where brain simulations might make things easier.

Three sci-fi references how i see things going horribly wrong, but so right at the same time with computers gaining/exeding human intelligence.

1) The Borg
2) Skynet
3) Replicators

Or we could let them roam free in space somewhere to become the real life versions of Autobots and Decpticons.

Far as AI I've read/heard about, a university had made robots with the brain power of snails with the ability to learn differently. Ehhh, rest was what you mentioned on your links.
