I vote I don't see any problem with AIs becoming as intelligent (or even more) than humans, it could even be the future of humanity if a sci-fi's level of intelligence is achieved. The problem is what purpose would their existence have in our societies.

Because if something goes wrong I expect a Matrix/Terminator/A.I. scenario were machines simply start looking at us as disposable and just get rid of us.

    ------

Although, I'm more of the idea of humans becoming more active on altering their own evolution through gene therapy and stuff like that, to get rid of most disorders and diseases. With limited intelligence robots as tools for dangerous simple tasks like space maintenece and stuff like that.

So in other words, my hopes and expectations for the future are much more on the lines of Star Trek (or Andromeda) than Spielberg's A.I. Even if I don't expect humans traveling faster than light or meeting Vulcans any time soon.

That's why I said my hopes are for a Star trek kinda future, humankind needs to reach a certain level before we can even think about AIs or genetic engineering as anything more than weapons in human's petty fights for power and money.

So yeah, if we achieved that kinda control over our genetic makeup at this day and age Coordinators would so rule the earth.

"Love is just a word, what matters is the connection that word implies."

I think if AIs evolved to a level were they could develop true feelings then it wouldn't be hard to believe they could "fall in love" with a human and viceversa.

They wouldn't be able to reproduce, but other than that it would be couple's call as long as feelings were real.

Then again, what level of evolution that kind of connection would require is beyond me.

Re: When has it gone *too far*?

Matrix quotes huh? Well, there are MANY more aspects to Marriage than love. In fact, love does not equal marriage and is often not involved...

I draw the line at "Robots are as intelligent as humans." You KNOW that's going to be trouble since an unarmed human can't dispatch a robot as easily as a robot can dispatch a human.

Maybe if you made robots out of styrofoam and balsa wood. >_> And pumped them full of an electrolyte solution that they relied on to power their systems. And then put all their microchips and processors in their head. Yeah. That should do it x_x

And let them run on Vista.

Edit: As a side note, if you voted for "Robot Marriage", was it because it's conveniently the next step after Sexbots?

Sexbots are completely acceptable. In fact, I've been pushing my local Robot creating facility for years on this subject...

Sexbots just sounds a lot like slavery to me. If it is simply a machine that emulates sex without any true intelligence, then I guess I can live with that. Might satisfy all the distasteful men in this world, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

Well we're already about two steps away from having real 'sex-bots'. Just put some small powerful servos into a Real Doll and BLAMO, robo-sex toy.

Me, I say we cut them off before we ever get close to even having to worry about whether or not a robot can think for itself. We created them as tools, they should stay as tools. Computers already run enough of this damn world, the last thing they need are arms and legs to move around with.

                              Irrational human thought processes ftw!
