  • The Traveling Terabyte

I found this story today, and thought I would share. There is a Comment by Deviant Ollam that is a good follow up to the article, and addresses some of people's questions about RIAA/MPAA, it is titled "so pleased at everyone's support and kind words".

Dushanbe (Tajikistan) –A New Jersey network engineer is on a mission to send some love and care – of the digital kind – to Americans stationed overseas. Going by his hacker handle ‘Deviant Ollam’, he’s been sending out hard drives filled with popular movies, television shows and music for over a year. Dubbed the Traveling Terabyte Project (TTB), the drives have seen action in war-torn countries and one set is now making a small contingent of Marines very happy in the former Soviet republic of Tajikistan.

    What questions does it address?

The guy is pirating movies, there aren't any questions to address.

I never said what he was doing was legal. I said he addresses their questions.

I never read anyone addressing anything. The only things that comes close were some jokes in the comments.

I find this really odd,, I have been in some REMOTE places before, I mean remote, Karshi-Khanabad comes to mind as one, and still had internet. We can bring and shoot our own trunks, thats what we do, so having an Embassy without a connection seems odd, granted there is a difference between personal and official connects, but still.

As far as piracy goes, we are allowed to buy pirated DVD's in Iraq and Afghanistan, quality is not that good, but the shows/movies are there, I have never heard anyone address the issue of pirated material, I know in Afghanistan and Iraq, I would rather have someone making and selling bootlegs than picking up a RPG to make 50 bucks for his family posthumously..

I see some issues with usage in and around Embassy's and secure locations.

Thats because those countries don't recognize copyright so they aren't breaking any laws. Try downloading and distributing them in US boarders and see if the Army backs you up when the MPAA comes calling.

Soldiers are only required to uphold the laws of the country they are in and the militaries rules. Not those of the US.

Not that it matters, the crime is taking place in the US.

What is a waste of money and what is hypocritical?

neokaril: if I have to explain it, you'd just bitch about it anyway, so it's not worth the time. Anyone with an ounce of creative thinking with the matter knows what I'm talking about.
