I fail to see how anyone who didn't actually know the person could legitimately say one way or the other.

There is a damn good reason we have a legal system in place.

Based on the known facts cited in the wikipedia article, it's difficult to imagine a scenario in which the mother did not kill the child, or was not at least directly involved with her death. It doesn't meet the burden of proof, but the mother's story that the girl was always with a babysitter that she had no way to contact and none of her friends or relatives ever saw, even while the woman was living with them, then that the alleged babysitter disappeared with her daughter and she didn't tell a single friend or relative about it or call the police for months until directly confronted because she was conducting her own investigation while partying ... that just isn't believable. If forensic evidence doesn't prove that the mother was responsible, I will be quite surprised.

We have a legal system in place to sort all that information out and take appropriate actions accordingly. We do not leave it up to vigilantes who saw a few news clips and a wiki article to mete out hair-trigger vengeance.

When given a set of data points, it's natural for people to draw a line through them to organize their knowledge in a way that makes sense to them. It's a natural and healthy thing to do for a species which grew up under the pressure of making life or death decisions with highly incomplete or imperfect information. So long as people keep in mind their own fallibility, it's ok. Concerning the casual judgements of people on a situation that neither affects them nor that they can affect, I wouldn't get too worked up about it.

'Innocent until proven guilty' exists for the justice system as a system, not for individuals, which would be impossible.

I just rearranged my entire bedroom setup so that it aligns better with my positive chi. I didn't know it (until I unearthed one of my feng shui books from the abyss of stuff that was in Beast), but I had been sleeping with my head facing one of my worst directions since I moved to this apartment. Which, if I care to believe it (and I kind of do), may be the reason so many things have been shitting on me lately. It was about a month after I moved here that my guy "temporarily" broke things off, another month when I lost the job I really loved, and the truck started being more and more difficult to deal with.

Maybe it's a bit hokey to some. But you know what? I don't care if other people think it's hokey. Maybe I just need to believe that good things will come to me. And if this is what brings me that kind of peace of mind, then I'll take it.

My apartment is still a mess. There was a lot of stuff under the bed that I need to put back there. And I'm sure I'm going to be feeling this workout tomorrow, but you know what? I already feel better. Now maybe when I lie down in bed I won't remember every single fucking time I was with that man and feel depressed because I no longer have him.

Not sure if I believe that, but reorienting myself will make it harder for me to visualize him being there. And damn, my arms kind of already hurt. I have a feeling my back will be soon to follow.

I'm sorry, but choosing to believe that bad things happened to you because your head was pointing the wrong way when you were sleeping is just shutting your eyes and ears to the real causes of your problems. Your life isn't going to magically get better because you rearranged your furniture, and good things aren't going to come to you just because you want or believe they will. That's only going to happen through hard work and persistence. Yeah, maybe it's going to take a lucky break or a chance encounter or something beyond your control to make things turn around, but those random events aren't getting a chance to happen as long as you're hiding in your bedroom pretending the real problem is your feng shui.

Do I really believe that all of my problems are due to something like that? Of course not. But if changing my room around brings me some much needed optimism, I'm going to take it and run with it. Sometimes, having a little bit of hope in a time where it's severely lacking can do a lot for a person's soul.

Do I think I'm going to suddenly come into money, find the love of my life, be reunited with my kids, find the best job ever, and never have another thing to worry about for the rest of my life? No. But I think that if it gives me a fresh outlook, what's the harm?

And if little else, it was a hell of a workout.

The placebo effect is surprisingly good at managing some symptoms, but it has never cured a disease. I took this no less seriously than if I found out someone was treating a serious illness with homeopathy, because as I see it that's directly analogous, and the idea that someone would distract themselves with rain dances while waiting to die of thirst just makes me sick.

Whatever. So long as you're not under the illusion that turning your bed is going to fix things all by itself and keep looking for real solutions to your problems.
