It's like she's a different person.

I'm not sure whether Lola was too sexualized for a kid's show - I was too young at the time to judge - but they could've made her closer to the original design if they wanted to. Most of us can remember these two

though so it does seem to be we've been gradually desexualizing cartoons (which is kind of ironic.)

Really though, I made that prude comment as a joke, but ten years ago, we weren't nearly as up in arms about sexuality and how it is constantly being thrust (pun intended) at kids everywhere. Nowadays, holy shit, if there's a little sex in that cartoon, it's blasphemous and it should be banned from the universe.

I know this has a lot to do with the political sway of the country of late as well as the way parents have shifted from being unable to actually parent their kids and take the blame for their kids' shortcomings themselves, but really. Ten years go, that sexy cartoon wouldn't have - and didn't - really bat an eye. Now? Hooooooly shit.

And fifteen or so years ago, that's when all of the coddling really started, if I had to pinpoint it. I think it was just tailing me out of school. It started at the elementary schools, then by the time I got to high school, it was starting to seep in there, as well. Our freshman class was the last class to have an initiation done by the seniors, for example. I still don't know why so many people got so butthurt about it. I took it all in good fun. It was just a week. I was not traumatized. If you were, you should maybe consider going to a special school. (And I went to a very private school, too, so it begs the question how these people even got in to the school.)

Oh well, I digress. This country has become overly concerned with sex in every facet of media, and yet violence remains largely untouched. Except in video games ... where, even if a game is extremely violent, somehow the sex gets more attention. I don't understand it in the slightest.

And people wonder why I'm okay with my kids growing up in Mexico? Well, there may be a bunch of Mexicans living there (chuckle chuckle, it's a joke), but at least they're not going to hell in a handbasket because of a handful of religious zealots.

Nothing will ever quite compare to Jessica Rabbit's "Why Don't you Do Right" scene, huh? I see things like this and think it's mostly harmless. Nothing you wouldn't see walking through the mall, where sex appeal and insecurity are basically used to sell everything.

That is really the unfortunate thing. It's the mixed messages that people are going to get about sexuality. On the one hand, abstinence and sex is bad and only STD afflicted back alley prostitutes engage in it. On the other hand, get this phone card and you can be just as sexy and glamorous as the Kardashians. Nothing honest going on here at all.

I may be too young to know how long this has been going on, but to me, it all goes back to Janet Jackson's so-called "wardrobe malfunction" on TV. And how people were so disgusted and offended by it, they couldn't stop showing it.

Once again, more mixed messages. I don't claim to have seen Blue Valentine so I have no idea if all the non-sense about it being rated NC-17 held any weight or not. But heavy drama movies that contain sexual elements get rated more harshly than movies that contain almost mind-blowing amounts of violence. Not only that, but human body parts flying and blood splatter are rated PG-13 just fine. But say the F-word once, and you're immediately rated R.
