So, because I am jobless and thus have a lot of free time, but also poor, so I can't pay to play an MMO, I decided to reactivate my LOTRO account. The game is free to play, though there are tiers. Because I purchased the game at launch, I was automatically put into the second teir, Premium, which removes some of the restrictions a fully FTP player has to deal with.

The cool thing is that you can purchase items to remove those restrictions, such as a gold limit, chat limit, bag limit, and things like entire zones or expansions with Turbine Points, which you actually earn by playing the game. Now, you can also purchase more Turbine points with real money, but you certainly don't have to. Many fully FTP players have made it to the cap without spending a penny of real money. So that's kind of cool.

I"m not saying I'm thrilled about playing it, but it's something to do in the wee hours when I can't justifiably do much of anything else. And it'll keep me from getting bored.

Oh, and also, my old characters were still there. I haven't the slightest clue how to play them after four years, but it's nice to have some money and items to start a new character out with.

LOTR fanfics ruined those books/movies/games for me. Some of them just devolve into gay orgies. Now when I watch the movies... all I can think about is Frodo gettin raped by Samwise while he's sleeping. NTY

Indeed. I'd like to stress that emphasis.

I read the Silmarillion every year. I read LOTR every five or so. I'm not as big a fan of the latter. I like the mythos though.

LOTRO is not a great game. But it's not bad. And it's free. Plus, automatically falling into the Premium tier instead of the FTP tier helps ease the lockdown a bit. It's nice that as long as you put some money into the game at some point in your life you will always be considered Premium. Of course, if I ever wanted to upgrade to VIP it's just a matter of a monthly fee.

Plus, this laptop plays it a hell of a lot better than my clunky desktop ever did. It's pretty.
