I've finally found myself playing through several games of late. Doesn't stop the MMO urge from washing over me, but so far I haven't succumbed. At the moment, though, I feel an awful lot like that XKCD comic about playing games five years after the fact.

All my best friends in RL who play FFXI with me have started playing Rift!!!

It's WoW and FFXIV all over again. They'll be back though... they always come back...

From what little I've seen of Rift it looks like some sort of WoW-HD game.

Is it fun? (Because I hate WoW.)

My RL buddy (a self professed NON-FANBOY) plays everything that comes out... whatever he's playing right now... he'll drop it when the next thing comes out. He says it's one of the best games he's played. Seems from what he has told em that there's every option to customize the user-interface and completely create whateve job you wana play right off the bat. It seems fun... I just don't want to start from ground zero again.

This guy went from Ultima -> PSO -> EQ -> EQ2 -> FFXI -> Guild Wars -> FFXI -> WoW -> Aeon -> FFXI -> Rift

He's tasted everything and claims this one is his favorite. Judge for yourself tho

I don't like the look of Rift. But that's me. I mean, if people enjoy it, great. But I've seen so many new MMOs spring up over the years, start strong, then peter out. I'm not jumping on any launch day bandwagons again. If the game does well, then I may reconsider, but still, I'm content to wait.

Say what you will about FFXI, but I have enjoyed playing it on and off for upwards of eight years on and off. Obviously not everyone feels the same, but despite it's recent decline, that's still a considerable amount of enjoyment for one game.

Meh Yyg if Rift is like WoW it'll take you little time to get to the cap anyway. I play WoW fairly casually especially with my alts but I gain levels pretty quickly on my lower level toons.

Can you imagine doing everything all over again? That's what stopping me from coming back. So many missions to re-do, so many jobs to re-level, so much frustration.

I have to admit, the idea of doing everything all over again is...ugh. But you know, it's not as difficult or frustrating. I mean, hell, $10 and I get a free month to figure out if I am up to the challenge. And if I'm not, I'm only out $10. Plus, this means I don't have to worry about buying the Abbysea expansions if I decide I'm not going to get up there.
