Basically, they go to jail and raise donations to post "bail" to raise money for MDA. It's really kind of a cool idea, though I just want pictures of my mom in jail. Since 1100 miles is a bit far to travel to see it in person. I wish I could donate.

The American English thing comes up since my "accent" came up again the other day >.> However sounding like a Brit when I was in fact born in CA and my family's last ties to the great Empire was the Mayflower just means I have a sexy speech impediment.

I usually associate accents as being a regional language phenomenon but this is the first I've heard where a physical attribute contributes to the accent production. Very cool.

It's the only reason we can figure for it. I was born in CA, we moved up here when I was 3. No one else in my family talks like I do, nor is it a Enumclaw accent.

I never really believed I had an accent until I had a couple of people from England and one guy from Scotland ask me what part of England I was from, why I was a foreign exchange student, and a couple of other things. It just kinda floored me.

Then too some people think my sister and I are twins, so another question that comes up is why do I have the accent while my sister doesn't?

I like to tell them that it's because I was born on the other side of the channel :D I even had one person ask, "What channel?"

Not that I would suggest Vyuru has brain damage, but there was a case I saw on TV where a woman spoke with an American accent. After a head injury, she spoke with an almost falsetto English accent.

Migraine sufferer starts speaking with Chinese accent - Telegraph

"Sarah Colwill, who has suffered severe migraines for years, believes she has Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS) - an extremely rare condition - which has caused her speech to change. The 35-year-old believes the phenomenon must be linked to her acute headaches.

"I am frustrated to sound like this, I just want my own voice back, but I don't know if I will get it back," she said. "I have never been to China. I was born in Germany but I moved here when I was 18 months old."

Mrs Colwill, who lives in St Budeaux in Plymouth, Devon, with her husband Patrick said she had been suffering from severe head pain for around a decade.

She has since been diagnosed with rare sporadic hemiplegic migraines which cause the blood vessels in her brain to expand resulting in stroke symptoms including paralysis down one side of the body.

The effects normally last for around seven days but recently Sarah has been having migraine attacks two or three times a week - resulting in the speech change.

"I knew I sounded different but I didn't know how much and people said I sounded a bit Chinese," she said.
"Then I had another attack and when the ambulance crew arrived they said I definitely sounded Chinese."

The change in Mrs Colwill's voice has left doctors puzzled but she believes her migraines may have triggered FAS.

The rare disorder is thought to be caused by strokes and brain injuries and causes sufferers to lose the ability to talk in their native accents.

"I have my ups and downs about this," said Sarah, an IT project coordinator at the College of St Mark and St John.

"The first few weeks it was quite funny but to think I am stuck with this - my voice has started to annoy me now. It is not my voice."

She added that despite the strong support of family, friends and colleagues, some people believe she is faking the voice change.

"It does get me down," she said.

The first case of FAS was reported in Norway in 1941 after a young woman suffered shrapnel injury to the brain during an air raid and began speaking with a strong German accent.

Sufferers can develop an accent without ever having been exposed to it as it is the change in speech patterns from a brain injury which causes the lengthening of syllables, change in pitch or mispronunciation of sounds.

She contacted John Coleman, an expert in the condition from Oxford University, to try to find out what is happening to her speech.

He said: "FAS is extremely diverse, almost certainly not 'one thing', not a well-defined medical phenomenon and therefore not the kind of problem that there are any easy generalisations about."

I've heard a couple cases where bilinguals had brain injuries that for whatever reason kept them from speaking their mother tongue, but for some reason their abilities in their adopted language hugely increased. Presumably, afterwards there's an even steeper increase as you're like 'holy shit this is the only language I can speak, I'd better learn some of it'.

Makes sense. From what I recall your original language is learned in a separate part of the brain compared to a second language.

There does seem to be some scientific support for extra languages being handled separately by the brain. Bilingual children for example seem to have little issue in sorting words between languages and pulling them out as needed. I would imagine something like that would be easily proven by a CAT scan at this point, although I'm too lazy to see if anybody has.

But yes, if they're stored in physically separate areas, a loss of functionality in one part of the brain being corrected by increasing connectivity to a lesser used area would make sense.

Oh my god, I just managed to tether my phone for internet connection. My phone has unlimited data plan, compared to my internet stick 5gb limit. I actually don't have to budget my usage anymore. Good lord.

Languages are far, far closer to... well, language encodings.

You still run the same basic OS. They just go in different files and/or directories.
