A co-worker of whom I'm very fond has developed a troubling habit of oversleeping & rolling into work whenever she darn well pleases. I'm worried that she's going to get herself into trouble. I got here this morning, only to see that she's not here. Another co-worker came to see if I knew where she was 'cause her manager is apparently quite pissed off.

I texted her to let her know she'd better call in with a good story whether it's true or untrue... and that I hope she's ok (she's had problems with a psycho ex-husband who is likely on drugs & definitely has guns in his home) -- 'cause I don't want to make light of the situation in case the evil ex finally flipped his lid & went after her.

She texted back saying she called the manager to say her alarm didn't go off. She then texted a few minutes later to tell me she's taking a bath & drinking coffee.

Um -- if I'm 2.5 hours late for work because I overslept (whether the alarm went off or not) and I know that my manager is pissed off, I'm NOT going to slip into the tub and take a leisurely bath before getting my ass in gear -- especially when it's casual Friday. I'd throw on jeans, a t-shirt, and a hat & get my ass to work withamajorquickness.

I just don't get some people...

Well Night, don't worry too much. It's her life and job to do with as she pleases. You can be her friend and call her to find out where she is but if she wants to dilly dally then that's her choice. When it comes to her relationship, all you can be is a friend and listen to her. If she reaches out for help, have the numbers of some womens shelters handy. I've seen too many good hearted people sucked down by dysfunctional friends so be careful. I'm a notorious caretaker and have to be careful myself when befriending others. I nearly died from one involvement, it certainly was an eye opener.

I turned down a job offer for a RF technician job like this. I doubt I'd ever be bored at work. Not with how often I'd have to change my underwear.

Feeling better today, though definitely not 100%. I did get a few, "Damn, you look and sound so much better today!" comments that I should probably consider insulting but don't, including one from my boss. He's actually pretty cool, though. I told him I was very surprised that there was no carry over work, and he said, "Well, they (meaning my other slowpoke teammates) had a lot of help." To which I replied, "I figured," and he said that our direct supervisor, whom we all call Gramma, was "riding their asses" all day, and even after all that, they still needed help from about a half a dozen people. While I appreciate that there was no leftover work for me to do this morning, I am pissed that those two didn't find an opportunity to get their shit together and learn how to do the work at a normal pace.

Oh well. I'm looking for another job. They'll be boned without me, and at this point, I don't really care. A few weeks after I first started, and I was the "newbie" on the team, they pulled us all aside and said that we had to pick up the pace. I knew they were addressing me directly, and I got my shit together and picked it up. I don't really understand why they're not doing that with these two, because Incompetent Stupid Annoying Bitch has been working here since January and hasn't figured it out, and New Guy has been here for over two months now. Maybe it's because I do so much to cover back there that they don't really care, and once I'm gone, they'll realize what a mistake it was not to force those two to get with the fucking program.

It's pathetic that people from the other half of the job process step over to do our job just to help out here and there and are faster than those two who do it every fucking day. And I'm supposed to feel bad about shit-talking them? Please.

Thanks, TGM. She's actually quite involved in issues regarding domestic violence and more empowered than most women in that regard. He hasn't been violent with her, but isn't the most even-keeled boat in the sea. Luckily, he's probably too lazy to get his ass off his couch to do anything particularly problematic. He hasn't worked for 8 years (says he "doesn't see himself as the employee type") & is a MAJOR loser. She has numbers for shelters and all kinds of other resources -- she's been volunteering as an advocate for victims of sexual violence & really knows her stuff.

I know she's a big girl & has to make her own decisions. I just tend to go a little "Mama Hen" about people around me, even if I don't express it to the people it concerns. This behavior isn't really like her -- I think she's letting off a little steam. She has gone back to school and should have her 4 year degree very soon. She was thinking about getting a Masters in social work, but now it looks like she may pursue Law School instead (so she can advocate on behalf of women who are being jerked around by abusive partners, insensitive law enforcement personnel, or anyone else). She's a sharp cookie who's just making some dumb choices right now.

I just worry about her, is all.

ETA: Aksannyi -- I hope you get a more rewarding/less annoying job really soon... hopefully one that gives you paid sick time so you don't wind up having to choose between staying at home to recuperate & making enough money to pay the bills.

Ok, I have two phobias that cause me extreme discomfort if I even watch videos about them, spiders and heights (mostly involving climbing ladders). (I threw up when they showed Kristen eat a spider on Big Brother.) I made myself watch that entire video but it took me 15 minutes to do it. My heart was pounding, I was hyperventilating, and I was having dizzy spells. All I have to say...NO WAY IN HELL!

Thank you. I hope that, as well. Though if I made more an hour and were guaranteed 40 hours per week, I'd be much more able to miss a day here and there. Right now, my job is a "per work" basis, meaning that we work when there's work and we go home when there isn't, so I have to basically hope for us to be busy, or else do my best to milk the clock so I can at least get 36 hours, which is the minimum cutoff. It sucks. I know that making my same hourly rate, I'd be in a much better boat if I got 40 every week, no matter what. Obviously. Though I am certainly looking for something that pays better in addition to giving me better hours.

Does your boss know there are other skilled individuals, such as yourself, out there that still need jobs? Dump those useless people and pick up the ones that deserve the job.

He does ... there are a lot of reasons why they're not going to make changes, most of which I know, and are very frustrating, but I don't really want to talk about stuff like that because it is stuff I'm not supposed to be privy to. Not that my boss or anyone else knows my screen names on websites, but I'm not fixing to talk about stuff I'm not really supposed to know about and run the risk of getting fired, as much as my job sucks, I still need it until something better comes along.

It boils down to the fact that they do care, but they can't really act on it at the moment. Six months ago they could have, but there were more pressing issues that needed to be taken care of - I've seen them fire six other people in the time I've worked there, some in the job that I work (and was moved out of, and then back into, to cover for someone they fired) and some not, and if they hadn't needed to fire some of those people - who were doing very severe "fire-worthy" things - they may have been able to take care of the incompetent people, who are doing the job, just badly. Credit given for trying, I guess. :/ And I can't even really fault new guy because he works closer to incompetent bitch and I don't think he really knows better, and I'm in a different room which makes it difficult to compare her pace to mine and realize that he should be striving to work at my pace.

Bees and heights, here. I'm not as bad about heights as I used to be thanks to taking springboard diving lessons (qualified for California's Community College State finals in 3m even though I completely SUCKED) -- but I had to leave the room a few months ago when my husband and daughter were playing some flight-game on the Wii (part of Wii Sports Resort). DH can fly pretty smoothly, but DD was dipping and weaving & making my heart race.

Come to think of it, I think I'm now more scared of flying than I am of height all by itself. *twitch*

Bees totally freak me out. I can't even be in the room with any nature-ish show with bees. I'm getting heebie-jeebies just thinking about them.

I always thought those guys should have some platforms every few feet that would easily close and open, just in case he was feeling fatigued and needed a rest, or just to prevent a high drop in case he screwed up (im sure its easy to lose your wit up there..)
