No, I actually do get it. What I don't get is why, when I drive less than 10 miles a day (and never on weekends only Monday through Friday), I haven't had an accident in over four years, speeding ticket in over seven, and I'm nearly 30, why my premium is so high. How am I really that much of a risk that I'm being charged nearly $200 a month? That's what doesn't make sense.

Granted, I think insuring my truck at all is stupid based on what it's worth, but aside from that, why is it so damn much? I am not more of a risk than some 16 year old girl who's hell bent on texting while driving with six of her friends in the backseat and some cheesy boy band playing loudly on the stereo. -.- The price is just not adding up to me. I have paid them on time every month so I've proven to be responsible thus far. Thus, I have no fucking idea why my premium is suddenly so much higher.

If your commute is only 10 miles why not ride a bike?

That's a good idea. It's healthy, cheap and fast enough for short distances.

Man I really wish I could bike around while working...

Because it's still on average well over 90 degrees every day, and I do not want to be a sweaty and stinky mess when I get to work. I have considered it, though. Perhaps when it gets cooler, though honestly I'm terrified to ride a bike down some of the roads here because Florida drivers are terribad.

Because of where you live and that old and crappy vehicles can fail in spectacularly expensive and fatal ways.

But of course, you already understand this.

It was fifty dollars before I switched companies for reasons I don't care to discuss (and it shouldn't matter). I don't understand how the fuck it goes from 50 dollars to 185 dollars in about four months. Considering my truck almost never goes over 45 mph anymore, even if some spectacular vehicular breakdown were to occur, I'd hardly cause any sort of fatal accident UNLESS a pedestrian were involved, and trust me, people don't walk here, at least not along my route to work.

An increase of more than $130 is ridiculous no matter how you look at it, so please, enlighten me. Last month I paid 104. Three months before that, I was paying 50 and some change. Without some catastrophic event taking place in those past few months, I am still not exactly seeing what justifies such a drastic increase. Even though I'm well aware that the insurance company has no idea how fast I drive, what my route is, and whatever else, they can see that I've moved closer to work and that I drive very little as it is.

And yeah, I'm snarky, I'm barely keeping afloat as it is. I have no idea where another 80 goddamn bucks is coming from a month.

It's just the truck 97 Chevy Silverado, and I went (from one company to another) from the state required minimum to the state required minimum. I really have no idea what the major problem is, of course, the first company was less expensive but I wasn't able to stay with them, so I switched to the second one, which was the second-least expensive when I shopped. Fast forward three months (and a move), I get an e-mail from the company asking me to verify my address has changed, and after I log in, it says something to the effect of, "Due to recent changes to your policy, your new premium changes are reflected below." Other than the recent address change, nothing else has changed with my insurance that I'm aware of. I didn't call to make any changes, nor did I get a call from them. I'm really baffled. The only thing I can honestly think of is that they're somehow racially profiling my neighborhood and deem this one to be worse or more prone to theft than my previous one, but that's not entirely accurate. (Even so, if some idiot stole my truck, that'd be karma at its finest - getting exactly what they deserve lol.) Either that, or living in the city of Tampa as opposed to a suburb (about four miles further out, really) was what drew the change. If that's it, well, that's really lame.

Either way, I'm going to have to call them tomorrow and find out what the fuck. I may be able to do the, "Well, I'll have to shop around and purchase insurance elsewhere" line and also just mention my driving habits and see if any of that helps them to lower it back down, if only a little bit.

Well, it may be "really lame" but from an insurance standpoint, it's an important distinction. Having previously worked in insurance, I can tell you, there are a myriad of risk factors they take into account, and what may seem like a minor difference to you, is a major one from their perspective.

That said, I hope you can get them to lower your rates.

Thanks Murph. This move has otherwise been so amazingly awesome for me - I love my new apartment, it's quiet and NO ROOMMATES (god I hated my roommates so fucking much) and I've just got my own little place in the world. Kind of sucks that this move may be what screwed me a bit when it comes to insurance.

Oh well. I'm looking for another (better) job anyway. Hopefully that will come along soon. For now, I'll just continue to live frugally like I have been. I don't like it, but if I have to live on Ramen to make it work, I'll live on Ramen.

Aks, when I received my latest bill for insurance on my Harley, it was more than 3 times what it was originally. Now take into account I don't even drive it so it sits in the garage and I haven't moved in 10 years.....can you imagine my surprise!? (I also get a multiple vehicle discount and another discount for having homeowners with them AND another discount for being a safe driver!! That shit should be going down not up! lol) I called and they were going to knock off $30 like they were doing me a favor so I called around. (I got lower quotes calling individual places over Progressive, who's supposed to have lower quotes.) I called back and said meet or beat that or you just lost a customer, they matched it. I'm only a few dollars more than I was originally now. So good luck...I hate insurance companies.

My car insurance for a 1.4l diesel ford fiesta is £306 a year ($478) it covers me fully comprehensive but is jsut for me in that car, for a mximum mileage of 12k miles in that year, it includes legal aid (cover for up to £100k legal costs) and windscreen cover. Now this is for me whos got 10 years no claims bonus, can legally drive a fire engine in an emergency and classed as an advanced and emergency driver.

Insurance keeps going up every year, why? its because of all these claims from criminals. We have a spate of them, they biuy a crappy car, drive in front of you, jam on the brakes, you hit them from behind, they claim for whiplash etc. then theirs also the uninsured drivers causing accidents etc and more extremr weather causing floods, hurricans, hailstorms, tornadoes etc. are causing premiums to rise. AKs, f you pay only $130 a year for insurance for a pickup, think yourself lucky, thats hardly anything considering what we have to pay in europe.

Why haven't urban squirrels and deer evolved to avoid cars?

One can group these animals into two categories, those that have been killed by a car and those that haven't. Of those two groups, only those that haven't are able to reproduce.

Of those that haven't been killed by cars, we can again sort these animals into two groups: those that have had no exposure to cars and those that have. Those that have had no expsure live in some wooded area secluded from roads and streets. Those that have had exposure live somewhere near a road or street.

Of those that live near roads and streets, we can fall back on the above two categories. Either they've been killed by cars or they haven't. If you see one of these squirrels, it's safe to assume it hasn't been killed by a car and is very aware of them.

So, that being alive is a prerequisite to reproducing, those squirrels that are reproducing and aware of cars must be producing offspring that are also aware of cars. If this is true, then a gradual decline in the amount of car-related squirrel deaths would be evident.

But, there are a few flaws with this logic. I'm assuming that if a squirrel is aware of cars, then it's aware of the danger they pose. This may not be the case. There's also the fact that death is instant, and thus no learning can come of it. Geese routinely walk through streets and roads without care. If each individual goose assumes that "a car couldn't/wouldn't hit ME", then that idea is only proven incorrect after a car has hit and killed it. At that point it can no longer learn that cars are dangerous, and every other goose can go on thinking it'll never happen to them... until it does...

My brain is full of fuck.

I am also only insured with the bare bones minimum. My coverage is shit. Lol. If I were to pay full coverage it would probably be right on par with what you're paying.
