This is mostly screenshots, but yeah, obviously a COP-era book isn't practical. It was 105Â¥ and I was buying it out of nostalgia, so I don't really care. I think some of these have plot information, though obviously it wouldn't be a huge deal.

They did have some kind of "Vana'diel Memoir" that looked interesting; looked like it was a collection of player's stories about the game, mixed in with lots of (fan) art. Was 1000Â¥ though.

I imagine the only real use one could gain from those guides would be the artwork, if any, that may be contained therein. For an ever-changing game like an MMO, the online wiki/forum model seems to be the only way to do things.

But the thing is, they release new guides with every update. I remember when I started FFXI and I told my friend to get me the JP guide, he asked "The battle guide? The map guide? The weapons and armor guide?" So there isn't just one guide and they go in depth in each one....while it's nice to have depth, paying for multiple guides sucks. Then he told me that after game updates multiple new ones would come out so I told him to forget it. It was too expensive, nearly $100 a crack every update (that includes shipping). So JP guides are MUCH more reliable than US guides. Of course, online help has opinions on what works best, what armor is best, etc but it also has it's negative aspects too. I'd rather get information out of a good book about the game or form my own by experience than blindly follow other peoples opinions all the time.

Oh, yeah, they also had special guides for party leaders, NM hunters, synthesis (their Synthesis Bible had a very, very pretty cover.)


Keep in mind that Square Enix is actually a major publisher here, not just of video games. They can nail people from all angles.

We had a super fun fire alarm scare at work today. Oh, did I say super fun? I meant super lame!

What's weird is that I was thinking earlier this morning about what would happen if the building burned down, and telling my friend/coworker (who is out of town) about the building being gone. Three(ish) hours later, the fire alarms go off for real and we all have to evacuate. Unfortunately, we were ushered back into work, but this is not the first time I've had a fire alarm related premonition.

Are your fire alarms loud enough to make your ears bleed? Ours are. They're horrible -- especially when you're in the stairwells & the sound is bouncing off the concrete walls.

I totally understand that you want alarms to be loud enough to get the attention of everyone in the building, but I really don't think it's necessary to have them as loud as we do. I was in here once with a pre-existing migraine when the alarms went off. I debated going to the roof and flinging myself off the building rather than dealing with going down the stairs for four floors.

Now when they announce drills in advance, I seem to *cough* get sick on the drill days. Coincidence? I think not.

My mom is a big time collector of Harvest Moon stuff. One of the games she got for the gamecube I think is in Japanese.

She has a Japanese hintguide to go with it.

O...M...G... It is the most awesomest and adorable hintguide I have EVER seen!

It is also a good thing that I do not live in Japan and that the Japanese stores around here don't carry any FFXI merchandise.

I'm not dropping $100+ every update for some information likely gleaned from the fanbase wikis and forums. I mean, I get what you're saying, TGM, but seriously. The guides, like a wiki or forum, are just a starting point. Most players are going to use them as a jumping off point and eventually figure things out on their own anyway.

They actually had a whole stack of newer and older ones, but this was the only one that wasn't magazine size; also looks like the content is deeper, if outdated. Plus, good old days!

I purchased this for friends years ago while I was visiting Japan. They since divorced and the most difficult time they had was figuring out who was going to get that. Really breaks my heart since they were both very good friends.

Yes, their guides are awesome. Its one of the reasons that I wish I could read them! I know the pictures are awesome, maps are detailed, etc but does the text live up to expectation?

And yes, I know buying multiple guides when there is an update wouldn't work. (And the $100 figure came from me buying them at full retail and shipping them to the US. If you lived in the area you could get them on sale and not pay shipping so it would be significantly less in the long run.) The point is that they break things up so they go into more detail and then you buy the ones you are interested in. For me, I'd be buying the ones showing area layout and what mobs are there. I have a JP one from the start of FFXI and have used it even though I can't read 80% of it. It still helped me a lot since I am map dyslexic. lol I'm not a fan of following some guide step by step and written MMO guides don't really do that for you. I like to explore and experience things without reading about it first. It's one of the reasons that I like playing a game when its released because you get the most lulz from not knowing jack. Some people like everything laid out for them so they can just go do it and be done with it and I understand that too, its just not for me.

They have to be. It's code - basically meant to also be audible to people with hearing loss, or in places like closets or bathrooms that don't have sirens. It does suck, but the upside is that it's so loud people don't loiter. Not that they would if the building is on fire, but some people really have a habit of being slow to the point of being obnoxious about it.

Just got home from the Rays/Yankees game. I have no voice. But it's all right, because we won. And shouting "Yankees suck! Yankees suck!" 600 times throughout the game and after was a hell of a lot of fun, and quite worth it, because we are now in first again. Fuck yeah.
