Oh Mhurron, since you posted those speaker cords, I am going to ask something electronicy.

I recently moved into the basement, which has speakers built into the walls. It's at least a 5 speaker system, I'm not sure if there's a woofer anyway. My problem is that the wiring is just bare copper, and I have no clue how the fuck to use that. Help for guy that's had Plug-n-Play on everything since he was born plz /

no insulation at all?
hook up all your speakers, then pick a set coming out of the wall and hook it up to a speaker out. run the test on the receiver that sends static to each individual speaker going in a circle. if nothing comes out, then flip the positive and negative going to the receiver and try again, then move those to the appropriate location out on the receiver. Lather, rinse, repeat for all speaker outs.
I really hope that made sense, not sure how to best describe what to do.

Well I mean, they have insulation, but they just end in bare copper. The speakers are already set up (they're in the walls, man, THEY'RE IN THE WALLS; also there should be another system that leads to speakers placed throughout the house but I don't know where that shit is), I just have no clue how to hook any sort of sound up to wiring like this. I'm used to dealing with RCA plugs and 3.5mm jacks and shit.

Any idea who installed the system, if they have done it properly then the cables will be behind metal top hat conduit sections embedded in the plaster on the walls. May be advisable to find out what the system is and speak to an AV specialist to get some advice.

A lot of what would be considered midrange (not really super cheap but not crazy) simply uses a speaker wire with bare ends that connect to the devices with a silly thing that just squeezes the wire to make contact. It looks sort of like this



If your receiver has the same ends, then you just push the ends in. If your receiver on the other hand only has RCA plugs then you're going to have to look into crimping one end.

Or just buy the $6000 cables, they'll magically install themselves and make you more attractive to women.

So you can convert a receiver that normally only takes the speaker specific rca cables to take regular speaker wire without extra equipment? I'll be damned. How do the speakers work w/o getting the +/- separate signals?

personally, my brain is pretty fucked up when it comes to sleep. Almost saw a neurologist about it once, since I was afraid I wouldn't be able to maintain normal hours at college (I hadn't through middle school, mainly because of a combination of not giving a damn, my spanish and math teachers not waking me up, and the nurse having a comfortable bed I could sleep on any time). Luckily, I've been able to manage so far. TGM, have you ever tried Melatonin? It's surprisingly effective, especially if you only use it now and then. It's much 'softer' than an actual sleeping medication; it shouldn't give you any hard time waking up, and it doesn't 'put you out'. It takes 30-80 minutes after you take it for it to start working, so you have to plan ahead somewhat, but it very much makes you feel like you're just naturally getting sleepy. Only difference is that it's probably quicker than you would naturally, and sometimes to me feels like I get a bit groggier. But it's a very pleasant feeling, not like "ugh, tranquilizers".

On sleeping during the day, my recommendation is just to get into a basement or interior room, and get thick curtains. Sleep masks have never worked for me; they're just too uncomfortable, and even if you manage to fall asleep in one, it will certainly work its way off before you awake. If curtains aren't an option because of some interior design choice, you could try window tinting. If you're really lazy, you can just tape some newspaper under the blinds, and remove it when you're done sleeping; quick way to block out a lot of light.

Thanks Feba for the suggestion, but with my kidneys/liver in the condition they are in, I tend to not take anything otc, but it is so very tempting. If I do fall asleep at a decent hour, I tend to get up to tinkle 5-6 times during the night. I'd love to drug myself into oblivion sometimes. But then again I'd like to take a sharp knife and cut out my kidneys at other times so I don't have very good judgement. lol

Well, ask your doctor first of course, but iirc Melatonin is a hormone, I wouldn't think your kidneys/liver would need to process it. But if your problem is waking up a lot, I don't think it would help; it's more of a 'getting to sleep' thing than staying asleep. Every time I've woken up after taking melatonin has been just has helpless as if I hadn't taken it.

Another thing you could try; one of those bed canopy-tent things. It would block out a lot of light.

Ya I have trouble falling asleep most of the time but there are rare occasions where I'll feel sleepy at midnight *gasp* and go to bed early. (Well early for me) But then I'm up overnight tinkling every hour and a half or so and that makes for some very shitty sleep.

I could never sleep with that burka looking thing on my face. I can't stand to have my face covered while I sleep. My ex-husband always wanted to sleep fully under the covers and I couldn't stand it.

Ever since I've started working again I've had very little trouble sleeping. I think it's also the stress of having moved and worrying about a lot of other things going on right now that is just exhausting me. And most would say that stress would keep me awake - not when you just pile it on and you have to carry it around all day, then it just exhausts you.

Yesterday, for example, we were pretty damn busy, but on Fridays, we have to get the work out by 3PM, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Have to. Well, the bathrooms in our building were all out of order thanks to some retard who ran over the water pipe that protrudes from the ground (for easy access for repairs/flushing, I'd assume) and I came in yesterday and had to step through a huge puddle on the way in, so I sat around barefoot for two hours while my shoes dried, anyway, getting off track ...

So we had to run over to Building 3 to take a leak yesterday. Well, whatever it takes you to go to the bathroom normally, just go ahead and double it. So we had a lot of work, and everyone had to run over there to pee, and so it kind of got us a bit backed up. In addition, because we had no water in our building, the AC was not working, since our cooling system runs on, you guessed it, water. So it felt like a fucking furnace anyway.

And one of the AC repair guys who "nigger rigged" (sorry, it really is the best term to use here) a hose from the other building to the top of ours to get the AC to work while we had no water, sprained his ankle outside, and turns out it was one of the people in my department's dad. It was just a weird fucking day. So I got home from work after all this, most of which doesn't affect me to any great degree (though the rush on work definitely does), but I was tired from having run over to Building 3 and back six times yesterday and busting my ass to get the work done and even though I've got a list a hundred pages long of things I need to do and things I just need, I slept like a baby last night.

Quite the long segue, lol. Actually, I just wanted to dump my day on someone, and this thread seems to fit the bill.
