I'm in total agreement with Mhurron about Best Buy. Their standard policy for any machine that comes in is to wipe the harddrive. I've had a couple friends who lost all their data that way when trying to fix other issues.

Oh, I would never attempt some kind of fix like that from them anyway. I really only called Geek Squad for the sole purpose of seeing if they'd recommend something I hadn't tried, which they didn't. Guessing it's totaled. I'm pretty sure everything is intact, just something is causing it not to turn on, so maybe a power supply or something. Not that I really have any idea. At any rate, I'm going to be able to retrieve my resume out of my e-mail, it just sucks that in order to edit it, I'm going to basically have to entirely re-type and reformat it in layers the way I had done before, which is just a lot of work. It's not like there are any jobs out there anyway, though, so it's not like there's some huge rush on it. XD

And because I can't get this out of my head, I'm completely obsessed with this song right now:

Watching my cat waste away was horrible. I became obsessed with where he was and what he was doing all the time. I'd even wake up in the middle of the night after having a dream with him in it and then have to go find him to make sure he was still with us. I kept having this irrational feeling that he was going to bounce back and be just fine. Just give him lots of snuggles and remember all the good times. Remember if its 7 human years to 1 dog year then he's 98 yrs old (I believe you said 14 once) so its about that time.

My dog's happy as hell since the cat is gone, not that she doesn't miss him but that she's getting so many treats and so much additional attention. lol

Nah, she's closer to 11 or 12, but that's still about the life expectancy for her breed (10-15, sheltie)

We never particularly got along well, but she's been there for so much of my life that it's going to be very very strange without her.

And I've been told you can't retrieve your music data from your iPod without iTunes, though that one I haven't verified yet, but damn ... that's like 1300 songs. FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU-

If your ipod is jailbroken you should be able to SSH transfer the music out of it. (Had to do that once)

I found a program that let me do it. I still think itl sucks though. I get why they do it, but they have to realize that people's computers asplode all the time and that no one wants to go and rebuy all of their songs when they can just retrieve them off of this music playing mass storage device that goes with iTunes.

I've had an iPod for less than two months. The main thing I've done with it is plug it in, add my music, and use it at work. Having not had any problems before now, I didn't think to look into what would happen if I lost my music. I also kind of thought I'd just be able to plug it into another computer and rip the music right off of it (like I did with my old mp3 player), and was surprised when I got my new laptop that I was not able to do that. Now I know, and I fixed it, but not without a few choice words.

Sorry, I spent $200 on something and well I kind of expected that I could use it the way I want.

Google helped me. Forgive me for being annoyed that I had to jump through some hoops but I got what I needed and I'm fine, just annoyed. Losing data is never fun.

God damn, I'm just going to stop talking about it. I have my ways of doing things and yeah, it sucks that I lost data on a computer that really shouldn't have broken (it wasn't that old and it was well taken care of, unfortunately past warranty of course), but I'm over it and life moves on.

And yes, I'm testy. I had a friend do something douche-ish and I'm pissy and I should probably not even be on the internet right now.

I still think you should hang onto your laptop's harddrive. Unless the harddrive itself fried all you need to do to recover your data is stick in an external enclosure and connect it to a new machine via a USB cable. Seriously, 20 bucks, BAM, all your data restored.

I plan to. I didn't toss the laptop in the trash. I just can't do it right now. I have to wait until after I move. And also after I get paid again.
