I have no idea what I quit with in terms of playtime, on both my main and my mule account, nor am I going to check. I couldn't even if I wanted to on my mule since it was bannzored, so I guess I'll never know. If you added both those accounts, all eleven of my characters together, you'd probably come close to a year of playtime over five years of playing the game. I did a lot of overnight camping and all day bazaaring.

But when he was 13, I did find some "magazines" under his mattress. A new feature I developed for a department at the company I'm consulting at currently. An enhancement for their software that will add some automatic communication between two departments here, who have related business procedures.
It's a simple, 5 or 10 minute demo at most. I shouldn't be nervous. I'll spend 5 minutes explaining how the stuff works, and showing it on a projector, then sitting back and taking notes as the users of the software discuss possible revisions to the specs I was given.
Should be a piece of cake. The software works. It's my first demo at this particular company and I don't know the business lingo very well, so communicating with non-technical folk can be a challenge.

Damn, I wish I'd landed a software development job. Instead I get to learn a bunch of IT stuff on the fly with no real background in it.

I studied VB.net, Java, and SQL Server in school, and this job (my first post-college job) is all about Oracle Databases, PL/SQL, COBOL, and UNIX. I had no experience in any of that! I.T. work always involves learning on the fly. Constantly gaining new skills and getting in over your head. Keeps it exciting. (It's the reason my little "mood" tag always says I'm stressed!)

Oy, anything *nix is always getting in over your head. There's only two folks I know who can handle *nix systems, one is something of a savant and the other has pretty much been using Linux since 7th grade. They're both crazy. I can fake my way through using Ubuntu but that's about it.
Looking back I wish I had spent some time working with databases. It seems everything in this area wants database stuff. I'm sort of in the same boat, first job out of college. I was hoping for something a little more code-oriented since that's what I enjoy(and also find most stressful oddly enough), but in this economy I'll take the oddball job at the IT firm and see where it goes.

Two of my most important attendees got tied up in month-end stuff and couldn't make it. So I did a demo for my project manager and just one user. Heh. She was happy with the features though. I'll do another demo next week sometime. But now I'm much more confident about what I'm showing.

I don't mind UNIX, as long as I don't have to do anything too advanced. I've edited some korn shell scripts that I could never dream of writing from scratch. Some of the big dawgs around here are UNIX masterminds.

I like coding, or as I prefer to call it, engineering software, but the majority of my experience (and talent) lies in managing data. I wouldn't mind switching to a DBA position if that option become available, but I think the $$ potential is better in development jobs. Ideally, I'd just stick with what I do now, and that's a hybrid of both code development and database work.

Bleh, anyway. Too much work talk. I want to go home and enjoy my weekend. Attention HADES players, Madjo will be logged in from about 8am to 2pm central U.S. time on Sunday!

Seriously, a good way to get used to using UNIX, which really is not that hard, is the following link. Oracle works very much the same way as a UNIX box that does one thing without X installed.

Glad to see this thread come back to life, though. It was a long Friday at the office and all the conversations I saw were hardcore hi-level FFXI chat.
