I didn't expect to run into SvR2010 players here. But could you guys tell me about SvR2010's online play? My friend and I want a wrestling game where we can do tag matches together against A.I. controlled opponents... but no game offers this option.

Anyway, back to ffxi... two of my buddies (A RDM/WHM and a BLM/WHM) and I (WAR) did some successful 3-person partying in the Dunes. We camped right at the zone to La Theine and I pulled sand hares and goblins. Leveled from 15 to 17 in a little over 2 hours. Not too bad.

We've been playing on the xbox360, so we can use party chat. It is so much easier and more fun to play this game with friends (people you know in real life) whom you're able to talk to instead of having to type everything. We'd just be joking around and goofing off and occassionally someone would point out that we'd gained another 1,000 xp. Good times.

I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate it when people use smileys in a discussion. They're distracting and disrupt the flow of a discussion. Hate every :-D that appears at the end of a sentence to tell people how giddy they are. Hate every :-D that people use to try to diffuse a strong argument because everybody should just get along. Hate every :-D that stands in because people are incapable of using words to speak for themselves. Hate every :-D used to agree with a statement I made. #%&! that, if you're going to use a :-D, I don't want your endorsement.

EDIT: Found somebody who agrees with me:

I do not hate them because they are cutesy [but I do] . I hate smileys because they are lazy and wimpy; because they rob the words that precede them of precision and allow writers to avoid responsibility for even attempting to find the right words and put them in the right context.

These contrived symbols try to do the work that plain words should do and could do and have done for thousands of years, and they don't do it nearly as well. Those who take the time to write what they mean and make clear what they don't mean will have no need for smileys.

Text-only communication did fine, indeed thrived for hundreds of years without smileys.

Imagine how lame it would have been had Shakespeare written for Polonius, "That he is mad, 'tis true; 'tis true 'tis pity; and pity 'tis 'tis true :-( ."

I tend to be more confused by some smilies actually. In FFXI, things like >< and ^^ are popular, and it took me a while to realize that those are supposed to be eyes making different expressions.

All in all though, I think smiley faces are good. Text based communication suffers from a lack of feeling. Dropping a happy face is easier than explaining to everyone that your intentions are good and you're having a good time, etc...

Honestly, I don't mind them on things like FFXI or say, Twitter (though I don't use Twitter myself) since you are limited in the amount of space you can type, so saying "><" can get to the point real fast.

But I was reading a movie review and the writer ended several of her sentences with "

". That is just distracting and, honestly, I feel it lowers your credibility. Maybe smileys are ok for quick little messages that have to be made on the fly. They have no place in anything longer than a paragraph where you want to be taken seriously.

I sometimes like to do things like read comments for reviews, or blog entries, or things like that. And I have fun commenting back to them. But if I see that despicable yellow face with a glance, I just skip right over that message.

Any time they're used outside of a quick chat format (i.e. a review), they only serve as a measuring stick of how many more days humanity deserves to exist.
