Go volunteer at charities if you're worried about black holes in your resume. Might be a good way to reenter the job force.

yeah, volunteering could be a good idea too, especially if the charity is run like a business. Goodwill or something might be a good place to start.

And Jarre, there's unemployment, but it is generally based on how long you've been employed in the previous x months, so if she's been going to school she wouldn't get much if anything. And it's only temporary to boot. I don't know much about the food stamp program, but I can't imagine it's much better. Plus, with the economy as it is, pretty much all of the government offices responsible for handing out unemployment funds are overworked, and there's a pretty long wait to get anything done. Remember, in the US, robust programs to help people in need are actually your representatives wanting to give away your hard earned money to people too lazy to get a job so they can get the too-lazy-for-a-job vote. It sounds ridiculous, but that's pretty much exactly how any safety net is portrayed as here. Which is why I specifically suggested looking for programs aimed at helping single moms, and put charity before government.

Just saw Ugetsu Monogatari, a very interesting Japanese film.

Tends to follow the same pattern of all Japanese films that I have seen, life sucks, it gets worse, and then you die only to be reborn and have life suck even worse than before. Ok, maybe they aren't all like that but it does seem to be a general theme amongst their movies.

Don't watch the movie if you're in the mood for something light hearted, but I really did like it and I'd recommend seeing it. I'm curious to see if I can find the book now.

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

Vyuru, ever seen Grave of the Fireflies? Or A Dog of Flanders? Or End of Evangelion?

Also, went to Half Price Books. %20 off memorial day sale. Insane deals. $1 for a new copy of Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance, $15 for a brand new tome of the Complete Sherlock Holmes, $5 for a 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle, $2 for a Japanese book about eating in the US/UK-- which I bought solely to read for the lulz someday, $1 for a Japan guide book (insane little book; small enough to fit in a pocket, maps of Kyoto and Tokyo, a pretty robust phrasebook, quick looks at grammar, Metric, and a dictionary. No price sticker on it, brought it up and the clerks were like "eh, one dollar I guess.". All of that for $20.

I am really getting over my head here, though.

Three audio books (Obama's audiobooks, Anne of Green Gables off LibriVox.) mostly for the lulz and to give me something to listen to while walking. Too many books (One on Russia, one on the writing of the Constitution, what look like narrativized cliffnotes of Iliad and Inferno, a travel book on New York, one on poverty and famines, Hamlet, four encyclopedia-like books on countries divided by continent/regions, one on the chips used in the PS360, the 9/11 Commission report, the aforementioned Sherlock Holmes collection and Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance). I also have a hold on DVD copies of the Frost/Nixon interviews. And then there's games.

Majora's Mask, KHreCOM and De Blob both on hold at the library, ZOE/ZOE2, Gun, DMC2/DMC3 on my plate right now. I also intend to eventually buy Secret of Mana, Super Mario World, and World of Goo, although those can wait since they're not going out of stock any time soon. Keeping an eye on Persona 4, too. Still considering NPC!Pikmin, although I'd rather wait and see if Nintendo releases a Pikmin Trilogy too.

I don't ever want to hear you say that you're bored.

Good night, then. I should have been in bed at least an hour ago, myself. In fact, I think I'll go there now.

Just got back from blockbuster. Silent Hill 4 and Kill.Switch for $3 each. Also had GOW2, but I wouldn't've played it without the first one anyway. Plus it looks like Sony will pack GOW1/2 in with GOW3, so I'll pick that up eventually. Didn't have Yakuza, what I went in for, unfortunately.

I am beginning to think I have a bit of a problem, though.

I've been in school, shit's tough, and when I apply for a job they ask me why I haven't had a job in a few years. I say, I've been in school, shit's tough, and they look at me like school is the opposite of what they wanted to hear. You're working hard for an education? Oh, we don't hire people like that. We're looking for somebody who was born with an education and has held a job since then to boot. Fuck that. I'm having promising discussions with employers through e-mail about job positions that suddenly end because they never planned on hiring me in the first place.

Not to mention, a degree in psychology comes with NO SKILLS. I have a lot of information I can pull off the top of my head if somebody needs some help, but I don't have the skills to help them.

I hope to death that Bethesda Softworks begins development on the Fallout MMO, because maybe then I can get my QA internship back as a job. I've never had a job more solid and dependable, and it paid well.

I've had the shitty jobs, the embarrassing jobs, and the jobs that go absolutely nowhere. I've looked into the eyes of people who have had the same miserable job for tens of years, who don't plan on doing anything else. I can't do that, so I know working my ass off in school is the right thing to do.

Spent 3 hours tonight slaughtering sheep on vomp hill trying to get Carnero to pop. No pop. But I did get a bronze bandolier from a casket, and a firefly while I was leveling sam to 10. I think the game is trying to tell me to go level cor instead.

I totally know this feeling, I was a journalism major and when I got out, the next month I started applying for various news papers. I had been reporting, interviewing and doing editorial and copy editing for TWO AND A HALF YEARS and I was either told that I didn't have enough experience or that it had been two long since I had experience.

You know, because AP news style writing is forgotten the second you step off a college campus, yet magically preserved if you've been at the newspaper since before I was born..

At my present job - which has nothing to do with publishing even - I met a guy working there that used to be a team leader within that company. He went to school to better himself and now they'll only take him as a temp.

Yeah, so now I'm scared to go back to school for anything. Fortunately, this new job may pay me well enough that I can dabble in some old interests and I hope to build a website and community out of those interests. This was my overtime week and the upcoming check is a little more than twice what I was making at my previous job, so it will pay the bills and then some.
