wm3k; yes, a large problem is that many communities and even entire metropolitan areas have been built up around cars. There's no easy way to convert that into good transportation, with current technology.

Like I've said before though, where you live, where you work, and how you get between them shouldn't be considered "wherever, wherever, and cars"; it should be considered together. Really, that's a problem throughout people's lives in this country; they consider everything modular instead of thinking ahead and looking at the big picture. "Oh, I can just put that on my credit card" becomes a mountain of debt ten years later, because you didn't budget. "Oh, a bit of cake is fine" becomes a fat belly in ten years, because you didn't consider your health as a whole.

I'm thinking about just getting a bike. Work is only 8 miles from home, GameStop and Kroger are like two blocks away, 90% of my social interaction is online, what do I need a car for? Just for taking the kids around and heck, why don't I just get them bikes? They're kids; they're supposed to have them anyway.

Taskmage, you might want to look into online grocery delivery. Not sure where you live, but it's actually much nicer than you'd think. Plus it's very cheap, like $10-15 extra, which when you consider the amount of time you're saving from having to go around the store to pick up crap is pretty good.

We don't have it in my area. But the grocery store is right down the street, and I just walk to it.

And I've come to accept that debt is the American way.

Fight Club had interesting undertones about reworking the way America worked, starting with changing the mentalities of people (the whole purpose of Fight Club), and erasing the records of debt that had build up.

I still categorize it as a "Fantasy", but it was still interesting to see how it wasn't just about whooping ass.

I live in a house built in the 60's the heat is via a wet radiator system from a boiler, their is no air vents, fans or conditioning units, I can't afford to install them.

Our house was built in the 1800's and we have radiator heat also. We looked into getting central air but found out it was going to cost between 10 and 15 thousand dollars. So a window unit it is!!..............that was until we got flooded and the air conditioner was ruined.

I gather the torrential rain forcasted for Friday is what you had earlier this week, joy oh joys, I hope we don;t get flooded again, its a good job I have my 1950's Dennis trailor pump I restored, last year it was handy, stopped my home form being flooded. and I pumped out my neighbours garage with it.

My poor son had to carry out 12 gallons of water upstairs and out of the house each time we filled the Shop Vac. A foot and a half of water in about a 650 sq ft space....thats a lot of friggin water to haul out by hand. He got his workout for the day thats for sure.
