wm3k; yes, a large problem is that many communities and even entire metropolitan areas have been built up around cars. There's no easy way to convert that into good transportation, with current technology.
Like I've said before though, where you live, where you work, and how you get between them shouldn't be considered "wherever, wherever, and cars"; it should be considered together. Really, that's a problem throughout people's lives in this country; they consider everything modular instead of thinking ahead and looking at the big picture. "Oh, I can just put that on my credit card" becomes a mountain of debt ten years later, because you didn't budget. "Oh, a bit of cake is fine" becomes a fat belly in ten years, because you didn't consider your health as a whole.
