Posting from my new Macbook. :D

Unfortunately, I'm connected to an ethernet cord, because while my friend has a wireless router, he doesn't know what his network is called, or what the password is. :/

Shouldn't the network name be listed when you directly connect to it, or when you go to 192.168.1.1? That or listed on network settings?

Ooh! Yes it should. I'm just not sure where to find that. I'll check!

The default gateway is the address you're gonna want to type in the browser, and if he didn't change the settings (hell, since he forgot the name, he probably isn't tech-savvy) the default password is gonna be "admin".

Worst comes to worse, all consumer routers have the "reset" button..

If we don't like something, collectively, if our hatred for it throbs like an abscess beneath every thread, does that mean that they're doing something right?

We still weren't able to figure it out, unfortunately. It didn't help that my friend has absolutely no patience for this sort of thing, so that we could only try for ten minute bursts before he would get angry and storm off.

When he was getting set up, I told him to have them come and do it. But he insisted on going to pick up the stuff and do it himself. Which is fine, as he managed to get the hardware sorted out just fine. But he wasn't able to even get the wireless account set up. It simply isn't broadcasting a signal at all. He's going to have a tech come out and sort it out for him this week, and in the meantime he'll just plug himself into the router.

Speaking of plugging yourself into a router, I've had to do the same thing at home. I share wireless with my landlord. It's included in my rent, and for over four years, hasn't been an issue. But my landlord doesn't remember the network key for our wireless network, and I can't get anyone on the phone with Time Warner who will tell me (I sat on hold for 45 minutes the other day listening to muzak). I'm going to continue to try to get it sorted out, but for now I'm just plugging my laptop into the router as well.

This is what I get for not having my own dedicated internet.

Murphie, you hang out with idiots.

                    Wireless setup is easy.

I mean they come with step by step instructions. Their web UI couldn't be any easier.

                    Also, post it notes.

It's not a matter of tech savvy. It's a matter of literacy.

I mean, that's like saying your friends are "whatever the opposite of a good driver is" when they're bashing their windows open with a hammer because they don't know how to use a key.

It would be a matter of literacy if literature had been provided.

I'm pretty tech literate and I couldn't set it up either. It was asking me to downgrade my version of OSX so that I could use the software that Roadrunner uses to set up the connection. My friend's computer is his work laptop, and they have a lot of roadblocks set up that prevented him from installing the software either.

I don't know why Time Warner was making us install software, but I could not for the life of me figure out a way around it. And since I could use the internet just fine by plugging the bitch in, I didn't see any reason to continue messing with it.

Don't install anything from an ISP ever.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

That's what I figured. I'm able to use our wireless here at home without having done so, so I'm not sure why it was being so difficult.

I feel kind of bad because I wasn't able to sort out his wireless situation, but without any literature at all, and with him getting frustrated every ten minutes, it quickly became not my problem.

Now, here at home is my problem. I'm going to have to sit on hold with their terrible customer service next Saturday or something so I don't use all of the minutes on my cell phone just so that I can get the damn password. I'd ask my landlord to call, but she's busy caring for her sick mother, and not even living here right now, so it seems like that would be kind of shitty of me.

Otherwise, I'm in love with my laptop. It's pretty kickass. I'm haven't really installed anything on it beyond iWork, so I have only really scratched the surface of what my options are. I'm going to read more before downloading anything else, I guess.

Who the shit did you buy a router from that didn't have documentation?
