Jarre, far less of us carry guns than you might imagine. I only know one person who carries one regularly, and he is an ex-cop, so I think he has it just to feel normal. He has a license for it, though.

If you want to try the US, don't worry about the guns. While there's no denying that guns have no reason to be legal nowadays, and cause problems, it's not a huge problem in daily life. I know only one person who owns guns, and they're pretty much entirely for the collecting value. Gun laws are actually a lot tighter here than you probably think, although they're still not nearly as tight as most other places.

You'd honestly probably have a harder time trying to use imperial units to design a building than getting used to the way society views guns here.

Yeah, I had some friends who spent the summer in Europe a few years ago. They said just about everyone they talked to said taxes were way worse for individuals in England.

If gas you mean petrol (fuel) for cars its £1.02 a LITRE which is $1.99 a LITRE or equivilent of £3.86 / US gallon = $7.52 a US gallon. Oh yeah and its going up by 2p a litre in april (the government are putting up fuel duty) which will make it up to $7.68 a gallon and even higher if the oil costs go up.

what really pissed me off was that SHELL a huge oil company keeps putting oil prices up yet they made £12.72 billion ($25 billion) proffit last year... go figure..

I will give you an idea of what my bills are every month...

Mortgage
Council tax
Electricity, Gas (heating and power)
Internet
Phone
Car tax
Fuel for car
Maintenance of car
Gym membership
TV liscence
Car insurance
House insurance
Food

I am lucky to come out with more than £75 a month to spend on what I want. ($150) which usually goes on birthday presents, consumables and the occasional night out with friends, but mostly it just goes on trying to live.

Just remember everything here is 3 times more expensive than over there, so even though your currency value is half ours, we pay the equivilent of half as much again than you would on anything.

its not that, its how easy it is to get your hands on and what you can legally own. I know someone who has an AK47, he showed it me on stickam. Its the fact that someone can carry and it wouldn;t be flinched at or anything.

The company i work with has been around for over a hundred years, some of the old draings (or blueprints) are on linen paper and all in imperial, I can work in both no problem. we still refer to timber in imperial measurements on occasions, its easier to talk to a contractor and tell him to use some 2 by 4 rather than 50mmx100mm.

I'm pretty sure that assault rifles are illegal in most, if not all, places. That person is most likely breaking the law. Either way, as was said, the legal people aren't the problem most of the time.

I think in some cases, "assault rifles", are legal if they done so that they can not fire in fully automatic mode. However the switch for that is pretty easy and can be found on the internet. I'm not sure about the legality of Ak-47's. Feba's right, its doubtful his acquisition of that gun was probably not on the up and up. Getting a gun legally is not simple. Lots of paperwork and a 5 day wait while they do a background check.
And people would definately flinch if he walked around with it. Its legal to walk down the street with a shotgun, but you'd get a LOT of attention and would probably have a cop following you everywhere you went.

Gas is about $3/gallon here in Detroit, Michigan.
That's right, I said Detroit. No guns here! But seriously, everyone I know has guns in their house, but nobody can legally carry one. In fact, if you did your research, you'd find that Semi-autos or rifles including shotguns are NOT permissable CCW options. So, no one can legally walk in public with one.
