Sooo...I finally worked up the nerve to request a huge raise today. I currently make a paltry $15/hr for a job that generally pays $19-22/hr at other companies in the area. They did my annual performance review, told me in short that I'm indispensible to my department and they couldn't do anywhere near as well as they could without me, and offered me a 3% raise.

I had run some #'s on what I've done in the last year, and it turns out aside from doing my actual job, I've saved the company around 8x my yearly salary just by catching little things that other people let get by them. I presented them with the #'s I had put together, and pointed out the window to the company across the street that pays my exact position with my exact qualifications $19/hr minimum, and told them to make it a 30% raise, and we'll talk. I'm generally not very confrontational on stuff like that so it was a pretty big step for me.

Can't you get a Hardship grant? In teh Uk college and university students can apply for one to buy the basics i.e. food, travel to college etc if they are really struggling. Talk to your student services, they may be able to help you or at elast point you in the right direction.

I did look into that, but because some students never paid it back, they had to discontinue the emergency fund.

My money should be (better be!) in the bank by tomorrow or there'll be hell to pay. Quite literally, I'm afraid.

Honestly, if he presents it with the facts he mentioned above, he shouldn't have any problems. I got a 5k bump in salary at a previous employer by just asking for it, and being able to prove that I was worth that amount of money.

Nice, Callisto. What field are you in again?

I work in a back-end Finance position, in short when companies short pay our invoices and/or take promotional rebates, I investigate why and if they are valid a credit their account, if not I call it out and charge them back for it. In the last 6 months I found several instances where the people who did this job before me were just blindly crediting customers without really looking at what they were doing, and I've recouped about $270k from those situations since July, in addition to doing the bulk part of my job which is mostly data entry. I'm certain that noone else in the department, and likely not someone who they could have replaced me with would have noticed the discrepancies that I did and followed up on them.

We're moving to a new system next month which practically eliminates the need for me to get anyone's approval to credit anything(basically the final approval step would be me saying "It's right because I said so."), so the importance of someone in my position actually knowing what they're doing and being astute enough to notice when something is wrong is about to go waaaay up if this company doesn't want to be bleeding money in the near future. The rest of my department consists of 2 relatively new people, my boss who has less time in the department than I do and constantly needs help with how to do things, and a temp who is either out sick 3 days a week or expressing how she doesn't like it here and is looking for a new job.

If nothing else I think just the sheer timing of it gives me a really good chance at getting what I want, because especially with the system change they're not in a position to lose the only person who knows what they're doing and actually gives enough of a shit to stop things from happening when they shouldn't.

I wouldn't complain, I got more shit done ingame during 3 months of unemployment a year or two back than I did in my first 2 years playing the game.

Hah, sad to say but that might be the best possible scenario. That happening with documented proof of me being the most productive person in the department and having no write-ups/formal complaints against me, coupled with me having a ready witness in the form of my ex-boss that I was actually shafted out of my current boss' job due to the woman in HR deliberately holding my resume out of the list of applicants and not informing management that I had even appplied for the promotion(still never got a possible explanation as to why she did that), I'd probably be able to make a hefty sum the good old-fashioned American way.

There is never any shortage of reasons to fire someone.

Unless he works in an "at will" state with regard to employment, they actually need to have a valid reason to fire him. Asking for more money is not a valid reason for termination.

No one is perfect. There is always a way to find a valid reason.

Nope, I don't. I work in a state where firing without valid reason = severance and unemployment pay for me, as well as a possible wrongful termination suit if the circumstances are right(see above.) IL.

Edit: Also in most cases, they can't come out later with something like say, logs of me viewing this site, and use that as evidence against me, unless they presented me with a documented write-up for the offense that I signed.

Moar Edit: I actually know this because this is how I got unemployment pay from the last job that fired me, they tried to challenge it saying that I was always late and presented my timecards as evidence, the IDEC told them that unless they can provide proof that they actually spoke to me about the issue and let me know that I was doing something wrong in the form of a disciplinary write-up, the get to pony up for my unemployment.


Aaand on that note, get to go home early b/c of inbound 12-inch snowstorm. Sweet.
