Official bored at work / just shooting the shit / no rails to derail thread
Re: Official bored at work / just shooting the shit / no rails to derail thread
Unrelated:
Sometimes my job makes me feel like an animal at the zoo. How you ask? Why I thought you'd never ask. Let me tell you how.
I'm contractually obligated to remain in my office during the entirety of my shift, with the exception of bathroom, cigarette and lunch breaks. I need to stay here because I monitor the radio frequencies for both the air to ground and ground to ground radios to relay and communicate messages between them that would otherwise be impossible. I also need to make sure that any paperwork that comes to me gets finalized, logged and filed away immediately.
I work in an office with 2 windows. 1 to the outside and 1 to the hallway. Co-workers, managers and flight crews walk past my glass windows constantly... and like a narcicist to a mirror... they have to look inside to see whats in here... even if they've already looked in here 100 times today alone. Other than my windows... my office is a reletively bland and simple space. A metal grate bars my window... it's purpose unknown. Who the hell is going to try to get in here? Gorillas?
So yeah... I feel like an animal at the zoo... stared at and passed by. Barred into a little cell and not allowed out.
Thankfully... noone obeys the "Do not feed the animals" sign. One of gate agents just brought me an orange.
You didn't fall asleep on the job & let two planes land uncontrolled in DC recently, did you?
Heh, no. I'm not an air traffic controller. I'm a ground operations controller. ATC is in charge of the planes when they're in there air, I'm in charge when they're on the ground. It's more complicated than that... but that's it in a nutshell.
It was nummy. I wish I had more. Alas, I shall have to wait for another hand-out. Otherwise I wont be able to get anything else until after I leave... in 2 hours.

It is unlikely I will have internet time at my new job, unless they hire a bunch of new people. When I went on Friday to observe, it was pretty busy and a little crazy. Then again, I'm going to be working from 7PM until 5AM (I think, at least that's my schedule for tomorrow and I would assume it's going to stay that way) and I'm sure that at times, it does get kind of slow when there's enough people there to handle all of the work.
But I'm going to go ahead and assume that my internet time is going to be cut down significantly on my days at work.

Working with an overnight security firm, but on the ops side. I initially was going to apply as a security guard (which I could change to later if I wanted) but HR felt that the operations job would be a better fit for me. Basically, every contact a guard makes on his shift, he needs to call in to HQ and we log it. Also, we aren't allowed to make arrests so if there is any situation where we need to contact the police, the guards radio in to us and we contact them. Same goes with EMS. So, short answer: dispatch, I suppose, though it was more exciting than that when I was there observing.
For the most part, they are tasked with things like patrolling places like apartment complexes and it has had a positive impact on reducing crime.

I just realized what is gong to be totally awesome about leaving work at 5 in the morning.
I can stop for McDonald's breakfast on the way home. I have never been able to do that leaving work anymore. I COULD HAVE EGG MCMUFFINS BEFORE BED EVERY DAY IF I WANTED TO.
