Sorry to hear about your circumstances. I hope you'll be able to find a new job soon. I think the problem facing the economy in the U.S. is not there's a lack of jobs but the jobs don't seem to be in the area where people are looking for them. You'll either have to relocate or transition into another field where you may not have gone to school for. Right now, everyone is competing for these service jobs, some people having to work 2 or 3 different jobs every week in order to pay rent.

Well I can handle that one, too. I keep my gun loaded by the bed. My neighborhood isn't the worst, but it isn't the best either. I'd rather be prepared for the worst.

Which reminds me of something funny I read in Cosmo, it said that if you're alone and you think someone is trying to come into your house/apartment, grab your cell phone and lock yourself up in a bathroom or a closet or something, and call the cops. Okay, fuck that. If someone's coming into my apartment, the only thing I'm grabbing is my damn gun. I'll call the cops after I shoot his ass or scare his ass off, and not a second before then.

Sorry, I don't care. The bathroom door is not that sturdy. I'm not going to lock myself up and try to whisper to 911 that there's someone in my house when I have the necessary equipment (and training, thank you Uncle Sam) to defend myself.

Then again, I guess the article was addressing those types of women who are too prissy to have like, an actual weapon, (zomg) in their house. Yeah, I'm not one of those chicks.




Today was a bit better. We were actually shockingly busy so I got a few more hours today than I expected. I'm just putting my applications in and making calls, that's the best I can do.

Sounds like something that happened in a movie and not something that would be considered practical advice. First of all, if the bathroom isn't in the bedroom, then you're screwed. Secondly, if you don't have a walk-in closet with a door, then you're double screwed. I think hiding under the bed (provided you can fit under it and it's not a futon) would be more plausible.

Although it would be harder to defend yourself with children in the house. A stand off situation with live firearms can be potentially fatal especially if the assailant takes a hostage.

Well currently I live alone, which is the only reason I feel comfortable leaving my gun loaded at all times. Things would be different if my kids were living with me, that's for sure. Then again, by the time they do actually live with me, they'll probably both be old enough to understand and safely use guns.

Which will drive my ex-husband crazy but he can suck a dick. My kids will know how to defend themselves.

My apt was broken into when I was home alone. The guns were downstairs because my husband had been cleaning them and reloading them. I hid under the bed up by the headboard laying with the width of the bed and not the length. I also pulled the bedspread down between the crack thats was between the mattress and the headboard so it kind of covered me up a bit. They did look under the bed, I don't think for people but for stuff to steal. My neighbor came home, thought something was up and called the cops. They got the guys 2 blocks from the house so we eventually got back our stuff, including our guns. But we moved immediately after that, I couldn't stay alone in that place ever again. I have the worst damn luck, I've been robbed several times and I don't even live in a high crime area.

I've been mugged several times and not yet robbed. Well, someone attempted to break into our car 2 years ago, but for some reason they couldn't pop the lock (they used a flat head screw driver)

The muggings were when I was a kid and got shaken down (literally) for my lunch money. Thinking back to those days of being a scrawny kid and being turned upside down by very large Samoans and been shaken down for money makes me chuckle now, but boy, those were scary times back then. Especially since I grew up in the projects amongst Crips and Bloods, drugs, guns, murders and lots of violence.

They have been living with my ex-husband's parents for nearly three years now. It sucks ... but I'm so broke, I can hardly support myself. That's no life for my babies. They are really well, and really happy. I miss them, but knowing that they're safe and happy and well taken care of (seriously, my ex in-laws are amazing) helps me through the hardest times.

I live in the city and have (thankfully) never had any problems. Then again, the building I live in requires that you have a key code, a key card, and an actual key to access my apartment. I wouldn't mind a biometric scan also though.

One time a guy came to my door in the middle of the night when I lived alone and had a front door that led right outside. He seemed shocked that I wouldn't open the door to talk to him. I told him I was calling the police and he left.

I usually choose apartments based on potential survivability in case of a zombie outbreak, though*, so burglars are generally also out of luck.

I live on the third floor. So any potential burglars have to weigh first the trip up the stairs, and then how much it would totally suck to carry any shit they manage to grab back down those stairs. That's a deterrent for quite a few people. As far as zombies, I'm not really sure how well they do on stairs.
