LOL No harm done. That's the Vic Viper, to be more precise, one of the four main ships from the Gradius/Salamander/LifeForce series (and one of my favorites). The other three (for those that are curious) are the Lord British Space Destroyer, Falchion β, and Jade Knight. A fifth ship, Metalion, was used as the protagonist in the MSX-only Gradius 2 (not to be confused with Gradius II).

It's an old series with a rich history, and one I've enjoyed throughout the years. The Gradius Collection for the PSP is pretty much one of my prized possesions these days.

More than the Gradius series? Meh, I dunno. I thought the environments and bosses were pretty bland, though I do have the soundtrack. Gradius benefits from having the whole mythos and nostalgia around it, so even though they recycle a lot of themes and designs it's cool because you're like "Hey, I remember that guy! Whoa, he does what now?" Life Force and Gradius V also have 2 player simultaneous which is a huge plus in my book.

Only on the GC. But this was a while ago when I used to still go to Planet Namek forums, and everyone called me a newb for jumping on the bandwagon and not playing the original.

It wasn't a good experience.

By the original they probably meant the dreamcast version. Which I didn't play because I didn't have a dreamcast ... Really in retrospect there were a lot of good games for it.

And 斑鳩 is the name of this bird, pronounced Ikaruga . I've had it stuck in my head since I heard it was coming out again for the xbox. I'll probably be making a new avatar for it that's black/white reversible. Really great game with a really simple mechanic that leads to a lot complex situations and decisions. Elegance in design.
