It's just that racism doesn't have much of fuck-all to do with gaijin cards.

Unless you simply enjoy getting out the Japan whacking stick of "lol, thems racist!". The gaijin card is something that non-Japanese foreigners have to carry around; it's no different than the green card in the US or any number of other immigration control systems in other countries. It's not institutionalized racism, it's a freakin' ID card for non-citizens. If you're a white Japanese citizen, you don't have to carry one, and the police can't do anything to you if you don't have it. There's just not very many of those since most white people in Japan have citizenship in another country that they don't want to give up.

So last weekend, I got addicted to an iPhone game on my friend's iPhone.

Kind of sad that one of the things I most look forward to second Saturday of next month when I next expect to meet up again is simply getting to blast endless waves of undead again.

Do you have to carry your Green Card in the states or something like it if you're visiting? Like can a police officer come up to you and ask to see proof of ID (driver's license or Green Card)?
FYI, I think the foreigner's card in Japan is a fine idea and don't think of it as racist at all. I'm just curious if the nearest equivalent here is the same and if so why some people go apeshit when its suggested that people should be able to prove they're legally in a country when asked by a police officer.

In the US a drivers license carries the stipulation that you offer it up to any police officer when asked, but the green card and entry visas do not have that. If they did you would have to carry your passport everywhere you went when you visit the US. Immigration is a federal matter anyway.

You do not have to carry your green card at all times, but they recommend you keep it in your wallet or with your drivers license. I think that is more so you always know where it is.

As said, in the US immigration is a federal matter, and you have no probable cause just looking at someone to assume they are here legally or not, as such they have no real cause to demand your papers. That is the problem in Arizona.

Yeah. I'd also heard a few years ago about how a state wanted to issue ID's to people who didn't have a driver's license to cut down on voter fraud and a bunch of people cried racism. (Nothing to do with foreigners, but shows some people like to call racism anytime the words "ID card" are used)

Honestly I see no reason why anyone over the age of 18 (hell, over the age of 14 even) shouldn't have identification.

Most people decry government tracking when it comes to ID cards for no other purpose.

Fun Fact: The Green Card comes with an embedded RFID circuit in it, and a foil lined pouch to prevent unauthorized reading. They recommend you keep the card in the foil. It's also only slightly green.

Japan is basically the same, legally speaking. There's no reason foreigners can't become Japanese citizens, so technically any foreigner can get out of the gaijin card checks by simply claiming to be a naturalized (or even native born, half) Japanese. At which point the police are pretty powerless.

The problem is then when they find out you aren't.

Don't get me wrong, Japan's criminal justice system is far stupider than the US's civil system, but the gaijin card isn't the problem.

Like I said, US green card holders are required to have it in their possession at all times. Whether that's enforced as much is another question; partially because any cop that walked up to people all the time asking for papers would get in trouble VERY quickly. Japan has a more "They're the police, they're our friends!" mentality, and there's not exactly a ton of sympathy for non-ethnically-Japanese citizens
