So there is this barista at the Starbucks near my house that I find incredibly attractive. Kind of dorky, but cute, and friendly. Today I went there with my roommate, and after I ordered my drink he was like "Um, that guy was seriously flirting with you. Why didn't you flirt back?" and I'm like "Wha?" and he's like "No one is that friendly and asks that many questions if they aren't interested. He was trying to learn as much about you as he could in the time it took to make your drink." And I guess he's right, because the guy kept taking opportunities to look over and smile at me, even as we were leaving.

Why am I such a social retard? I never notice this shit.

Look at the bright side, at least you are dealing with guys, we are way more direct and easy to understand.

Now imagine going through that with a woman. Man, I can't remember how many times they were supposed to be interested but did everything in their power to make me think otherwise because they wanted to play hard to get, whatever that is. I don't like wasting time on that kind of crap when I could be getting to know them better as a person instead.

And of course they never dare to tell you all these things about their feelings towards you until after they see you dating someone else.

Things like "Second coffee of the day already? Well, you don't look sleepy if it helps. So, you're in here fairly often, do you work nearby? Oh, you live nearby? That's cool. What's it like living downtown? So where do you work? What do you do? Oh, that's cool. Do you go out much around here? Where do you go?" Etc.

EDIT: Raydeus, I wish it were that easy. Unless specifically told otherwise, I generally assume guys I meet are straight (because they are, usually). So I likely often miss flirting opportunities because I just don't realize that the guy is even an option. And I'm sure as hell not going to flirt without being sure, because that's an easy way to awkwardtown.

Yeah, but then you live somewhere like here (Tampa) where the mass transit is utter shit - I live about 5ish miles from work, and to get there, I'd have to get up at 4 AM (to start work at 7) and change buses four times -- and it's no wonder people choose to drive anyway.

Yep same here. Largest metropolitan area in the state yet our transit system is total crap. Hell most people couldn't point out a bus stop or give your a suggestion at an alternate way to travel here because its so bad. The best they could tell you is to get your walking shoes on. Bus fares are high here too and most people here are making poverty level wages, so it keeps people from jobs in other areas. The monthly pass can be 1/2 or more than 1/2 of a weeks pay because most jobs are part time. Now the governor wants a light rail system to start here and, of course this being an election year, the opposition is fighting it tooth and nail.

I was glad my friend invited me over late yesterday afternoon for a chat with her and a needed hug.

It's not really an easy question to ask. Especially when in line to get coffee, and we're surrounded by other patrons and his coworkers.

edit: Believe me, this isn't the first opportunity I would have missed due to unclear messages, or my total obliviousness, etc. I don't know how many times I've run into someone years later and have found out that they really hoped I would ask them out, but I didn't, and now they are in a relationship, and are really happy, and oh well, nice running into you again.
