If you are planning on riding the same bike on and off road, you may want to ensure that the suppension locks out and becomes rigid. Otherwise you lose alot of power into the shocks.

Just a suggestion (perhaps biased) but I ride a Trek 6500. The current model of the bike is about $1k but when I bought mine about 3 years ago it was only about $650 new (without disk brakes). If you could find one used that is about the same year you could probably pick it up for $300-500 depending on condition.

Not a bad idea. We have several great bike shops in the area that I'm going to hit up this weekend for pricing, size, etc. Of course, my fucking roommate who always wants to bring me down it seems is like "Where will you even store a bike?" IN MY NEW APARTMENT THAT I AM CURRENTLY HUNTING FOR BECAUSE YOU ARE MAKING ME A CRAZY PERSON. That's where.

The ceiling is 15 feet high. That'd be a bit inconvenient. But I could put hooks on the wall or something.

My friend is trying to get me into biking. I'm trying to get into better shape before doing another 14er. Just wish the town I live in was better suited to biking, or that I wouldn't mind going into work dripping sweat.

This. I screwed up and bought a hybrid bike that does not have this lockout feature for the front suspension. When I stand up to do some heavy pedaling it does not work well. The suspension keeps me from getting a good rhythm.

Murphie I was going to recommend that you shop for an older model. Bike shops discount last year's models by at least 10% and sometimes a lot more, so you can find some pretty good deals. I picked up a 2009 Trek navigator 2.0 for around 380$ before taxes. The comparable model that had the lockout feature was about 100 more at that particular store. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of that model.
