you might want to look into buying converters instead of getting the speakers with the attachment. I know I've got an attachment to hook my headphones up to AV cable output, which I love; not much of a way to get that with headphones. That converter is just a connector-- I'd imagine a digital audio line would need something with some electronics in it at least, which would be more expensive, but it might be worth looking into.

Up until this point I haven't been a huge audio person, so I'm still learning all the details. I'm think I might head up to Best Buy and ask a sales associate to show me what speakers they have with aux-in or optical-in. I know Logitech supports both, but only their high-end models support optical-in. I feel like the aux-in would be messy, but if it's the only thing in my price range...

Yeah, do not ask Best Buy employees what kind of battery your razor takes. Never worth it. Get a friend, trusted coworker, or something.

If nothing else, go up to the guy walking around Best Buy like he's collecting munitions and ask him for advice. More reliable, and he won't try to sell you a warranty on your boxers.

Well, I wouldn't ask them their advice. I would simply ask them which speaker systems they're currently offering feature aux-in or optical-in. I've been down the advice road before, and, while they're not as bad as care salesmen, they're still pretty bad.

"Oh, you want to play computer games? This random computer here, conveniently within arm's length, is all you'll ever need to play the games you want to play!"

My speakers are remarkably similar. 2.1 Logitech, looks like the same layout, except my woofer lacks the feet, and my speakers are more rounded and on a base. Mine's good, and I've just gotta say I've got a boner for logitech products in general. Headphones are the only place they've disappointed me, and most headphones do.

Hmmm... Gaming Laptop or iPad? Where should I spend my money?

I already have a desktop that can run most games decently, the problem is since I have limited bandwidth in the mountains, I can't download anything (from steam, or itunes, or anything in between). With a gaming laptop, I can head to town (which is 40 mins away), pay 5 dollars for Wifi, and download all the stuff I need to on the weekends. ~$1500

With an iPad, it's just a cool toy for reading comics. And playing really bad iPad games. ~$600

Decisions, decisions.

Go for the laptop. Sounds more useful and you can scrap it for parts later on when it dies.

While I love the iPad dearly and highly recommend it, in your situation it sounds like you need a laptop. You won't be able to do what you mentioned with an iPad. I have computers all over the damn house and an excellent connection so if what I want to do can't be accomplished on my iPad, I just pop open a laptop or boot up my PC. I can go on and on about the iPad but you need to weigh the pros and cons of what you want to accomplish. (Though I will say that I have only used my living room laptop 2 or 3 times a week since I got my iPad.)
