There's been times I have googled a specific something to the T.. and it brought shit up that I didn't even have in the search. I forgot what I searched, but there was Elephants in the images. I googled nothing with Elephant in it!

After a full month in this position I finally started actual work yesterday, beginning with a 64-minute training video on this software that I have to keep re-watching parts of...the only options for viewing it are 'too tiny to see' and true fullscreen, so I can't actually look at the spreadsheet that I need to be filling out while watching the video.

If I go idle for more than a few minutes on the video screen it kicks me out of the video and back to the 'getting started' screen, and I get to let the video reload/rebuffer and try to figure out where the hell I left off. Aaand I'm still managing to get yelled at for pretty much every action I take one way or another, so at this point I'm kind of just starting to come in a half-hour late and leave a half-hour early and see what happens first between me quitting or getting fired.

uhh, kind of a wall o' text, sorry...I work for a small business(as Mhurron noted before, small business owners are typically asshats). It's a 9 person company that manages membership-based organizations(non-profits, academic societies, etc), they outsource the actual meeting planning/accounting/etc to us when they can't handle it themselves.

My position atm is to take this association management software(glorified Access more or less) that they've been paying for a license of for over a year without actually setting it up, and to set up our clients' membership lists within it. Noone here has any idea how the software works, I'm the only person here who has ever actually touched it...they were not able to tell me where the implementation process left off back in July of 08 when it was back-burner'd, they have no idea where to start or what to do and I'd never even heard of the software before nor set up a database of any sort myself, so I have to learn it all from scratch.

They knew they wanted me doing this a month before I actually started(I was a temp receptionist at first)...when I actually get into the position they don't have a windows ID or email setup for me yet, that takes like 2 days somehow. Then I have to dig through old emails to find out who I need to contact to find out where we left off, I find it, but they're in Virginia and in a state of emergency under 2 feet of snow at the time, so it takes a week to even hear back from them to get started.

The setup process is a very long, drawn-out thing, 45 day process at the least, half of that being waiting for the reps at the company to get back to you. Aside from that I kept hitting hitches like learning that I need speakers to actually do the training, finding out we have no speakers, waiting a few days to get some, then finding out we have no power strip and there's more things to plug in down here than outlets...sending an email asking if anyone knows where there's a power strip(which I got yelled at for, for emailing the 2 head people instead of one of the 6 lesser employees), then digging in a frozen off-site storage garage for 2 power strips for 30 minutes, only to get back to have them say OH HAY LOL WE HAD ONE HERE THE WHOLE TIME, and to get yelled at again for the email.

I finally start in on the training yesterday, but as I said above it takes forever to actually get through the video, lol.

The dreaded garage.............We have a storage unit where we store all of our documents after they are scanned into our viewing system. That way the originals are kept safe and the server has the digital versions on a server in the tech department. Anywho, whenever something doesn't appear in the viewing system, somebody has to go out to the garage and look for it. Mind you none of the boxes are really accurately labeled so if you need to find something, you might be out out there for hours. I've never been out there but I've heard stories about it.

Somebody sent me out there to find something last year, and I was under the impression that they had already looked for it in our building first, but of course they hadn't. Right before I went out there I decided to look for it in the building and of course that is where it was. That would've been a bunch of useless hours wasted and even then when I found the paperwork, the documents that should've been with them were not there. The department that was looking for the documentation never sent it over and ended up finding it in their building...

I found a spare monitor. Hurray for multiple screens.

Unfortunately I also found a large pile of work involving stuff I hardly know anything about. I dislike having to learn everything on the fly and having to fake my way through things.

Learn acronyms, everyone will think you know exactly what you're talking about. Multiple monitors with many windows open, especially consoles with text flying by makes you look very busy and like you have a good handle on everything that is going on.

I've lost count of how many windows and tab I have going right now. Providing the illusion of work and progress isn't hard, it's when the boss comes by and wants to see a certain piece of software fully functional by the end of the day and I'm still trying to figure out how to configure the prerequisite software that things get a little dicey.

So apparently our company network has no ISA servers. Yeah, I don't really know much about that but I get to fix that sometime in the next week. Oh the joys of pretending you know what they hell you're doing. I just hope I don't set the servers on fire or something.
