I got started on Bleach and Naruto back when they were still coming out so it's never been as daunting a task for me.

Gilgamesh had so much potential based on how the first few episodes went. I kept watching because I was sure they were going to pull a role reversal where the antagonists turned out to be the good guys, instead it was just a miserable failure with a bullshit ending. At least the opening theme was nice.

Still trying to get my "Gundam Weight Up" as a friend of mine would call it. I recently watched Gundam F91 and I'm trying to get back on Victory Gundam. Still need to watch Original Gundam and Gundam ZZ.

I'm on Bleach 103 and love it. I do sky on saturday nights, im next in line for w legs, and love going up there with BLM, and watching bleach on the laptop. FFXI on the 50", bleach on the laptop. It makes sky fun. There's so much downtime, especially on BLM, bleach fills in well. And the anime is just so damn good imo. There's new shit happening every epeisode, and those anime boobies aint bad. >:O

I never got into Gundam and by now the franchise is so expansive I wouldn't really know where to start. It's been going for what, 2 or 3 decades now? It's like trying to get into a long running comic book universe.

The few episodes of Bakemonogatari I saw showed a lot of promise. I got really excited about the prospect of a bloody showdown involving school supplies, but they managed to screw that up. Still, it looks pretty good so it's on my list of things to watch.

Right now though I'm working my way through Paranoia Agent. I don't know how I missed that show, but it is amazing. It comes across as something of a twisted satire of reality with enough surrealism to keep me off balance and leave me guessing after every episode. Definitely one of the better animes I've seen.
My friend pointed out that it's done by the same guy who did Boogiepop Phantom, so I'm gonna have to check that out later as well.

@ Mezlo: Bleach is good for mass consumption but I wouldn't call it good. Entertaining yes, but not good.

Oh don't take it so personal.
It's like how I love old Godzilla movies, but I don't think anyone would mistake them for cinema masterpieces. Entertaining as hell, but not exactly what you would call a good movie.

Hope you enjoy Paranoia Agent. It's a damn weird ride but I am thoroughly enjoying it.

That's about how I feel about long running animes .

There are different series of Gundam where some of them fall in different timelines which is part of the reason why the opening cinematics describing why war between Earth Vs. Space alliances are different. I most definently didn't start in order since the first Gundam anime I remember watching was Gundam Wing and the 2nd was G Gundam (Thanks Cartoon Network LOL). You might want to start with the more recent series that aren't connected to the main timeline (U.C.). These would be:

G Gundam
Gundam Wing
After War Gundam X
Turn A Gundam (Turn A is weird...)
Gundam Seed (Gundam Seed Destiny is the Sequel to Gundam Seed)
Gundam 00 (Newest Series that concluded last year.)

The funny thing is that I think those might be listed correctly by year they came out.

If you want to start with the older series you'd have to start with "Mobile Suit Gundam" which is the original. If you start with Mobile Suit Gundam Z(Zeta) like I did, then you will miss out on some of feuds between characters who reappear in Zeta.

There are also plenty of OVAs and Movies that I won't list, mainly from the UC timeline. (Nothing against the UC timeline, but I haven't seen most of it .)

I bought Dynasty Warriors: Gundam awhile back, and that was what made me remember the joy of Gundam. Causing me to go out and buy Gundam Wing and that's what started me on my anime path. Started with Gundam onry, then moved to other Mechas, and then expanded in other genres until now.

Definitely start with UC, it is the best, the standard, and the one most likely to appeal to any given person. Other Gundam series are so full of references and reused materials that later characters and events are cliche to anyone familiar with UC; Char clones being the most obvious example. Start with the Mobile Suit Gundam Movie trilogy. It condenses 43 episodes of 0079 condensed down to three feature-film length segments; originally for Japanese theatres. It's not just a better gundam, it was a big step forward for the entire genre.

After watching the movie trilogy, I'd recommend watching 008th MS Team, and 0080: War in the Pocket. After those, I would skip 0083, I've seen it and it's utterly forgettable. You should probably watch Zeta and Double Zeta for the sake of continuity, although I was never huge on either of them; and haven't watched past the first few episodes of Double Zeta (and not for lack of trying). Definitely watch Char's Counterattack; you can grasp most of what's going on whether you've seen Zeta and Double Zeta or not. Gundam F91 is also skipable.

Definitely do watch at the very least the three Gundam Movies plus Char's Counterattack for a grounding in UC knowledge before you move on to the other series, though.

I was waiting on Feba to chime in when I said that I couldn't speak for the UC series.

I really did like 008th Mobile Suit Team. To only be 12 episodes, it got quite a bit accomplished, storywise and character development wise.

F91 reminded me of Star Wars for some reason. Especially this one scene where the song playing sounds similar to the imperial march.

They're a very long 12 episodes.

On Non-UC, I'd recommend starting with Wing. Probably the one with the most exposure stateside, period, and not completely fucking ridiculous (angsty as fuck, but kids in war generally are, and kids in war is pretty much the entire point of Gundam). Also probably the easiest Gundam series to manage, all that's really there is the series is the 49 episodes of the show and the Movie (Endless Waltz; originally an OVA but nobody cares about that). If you REALLY crave backstory, there's another OVA out there (Operation Meteor) and a few manga (iirc, they're all short enough that they're one volume each) which again, nobody cares about. Everything you need to enjoy the show and feel fulfilled is in the series and movie, and you really don't need to go beyond that.

Yeesh, it sounds like I've been given about 8 different starting points for this thing.
Gundam Wing sounds familiar though. If I end up getting into Gundam at all I'll probably start with that and work my way out from there.

No, you've been given one starting point and some crappy suggestions. Start with the Gundam Movie Trilogy, it'll give you the quickest view of what the franchise is like generally and the basic plot (which again, has been recycled many times), while still being full, accurate, and enjoyable.

Do not start with Gundam W; it's not a bad series, but it's an homage to the original in many ways. If you haven't seen Gundam, Gundam Wing simply isn't a complete experience.

Feba, when I was at that Anime Convention, they had a "UC Gundam is the Best" panel. It made me think about you for some reason when I was there. The funny thing was that none of the panelists showed up so it ended up being a forum between the people that were there. When the thing started, some random guy who was dressed as Little Mac from Punch out, ran up and shouted Domon's "This hand of mine is burning Red" full speech in both english and japanese. Scary...I know.

It doesn't say too much about that series, if it's a damn convention, and the panelists don't even bother to show up. I'm surprise nerd rage didn't take over at least a few of the anime convention visitors...
