Official bored at work / just shooting the shit / no rails to derail thread
Re: Official bored at work / just shooting the shit / no rails to derail thread
The idea behind sharepoint is not a bad one. The problem is more the users. Sharepoint should be able to (and will) replace Exchange Public Folders and numerous network shares for sharing inter-department files and notices. The problem is that users simply end up using it as a dumping ground. You end up with files and messages that are disjointed just as much as if someone just puked all over the file system. No one takes the time to set up proper relations between files and/or messages. Sharepoint allows and pretty much encourages this by not having a mechanism to either require or suggest that proper metadata be created for each object.
Also, it is not a CRM. Don't try to use it as such.
Re: Official bored at work / just shooting the shit / no rails to derail thread
I don't know about that. A lot of the stuff I've encountered so far has given me the option of enforcing meta data entries. Although I guess there's not much you can do if users are just gonna click through and type gibberish into the textboxes to make the error messages go away.
I'm more frustrated with the fact that I have to learn it out of a book while waiting for them to give me a machine to set up a development environment on. There's only so much I can learn by reading without having something I can break to play with.
Re: Official bored at work / just shooting the shit / no rails to derail thread
Well Sharepoint sucking was kind of a foregone conclusion since I'd rather be programming than learning some MS web thingy. With a working environment I'll at least get to peek at some backend code.
P.S.
The machine I'm on now doesn't really have the specs to handle much in the way of virtual machines, I already tried :/
Re: Official bored at work / just shooting the shit / no rails to derail thread
my campus is getting a bandwidth upgrade over fall break (Thursday&friday), so hell yes there. almost impossible to use that network for anything sometimes.
Speaking of which, Mhurron, how would one detect if a school URL is redirecting to the server over the local network (local DNS); just traceroute?
Also working on a research paper. Was dreading all of the work, but my outline is already a page long, and I've already got all of my sources cited and summarized, as well as my notes taken, so all I need to do is flesh out my points, integrate some quotes and claims, and I could have a good draft tonight.
