Jarre: most if not all states here also have laws requiring child seats.

The problem is that we're talking about laws of man, not the universe. There should be something in physics that keeps things from being that incredibly stupid, but unfortunately there's no such thing, and there's nothing we can do about it.

Your laws are very similar to ours. The one thing that I'd like to remind people too is that it is the DRIVERS responsibility to make sure that children are safely secured. So if you have a friend that wants a ride and has a baby but doesn't bring the car seat with him/her, if you get pulled over you won't get off saying that its their fault. I had a mother rant about this one day with me and I just could not get her to understand that she should have told her friend that she wouldn't transport the baby without the car seat. It was especially stupid in this case since the car seat was in the damn house but the friend was too lazy to go get it.

I don't see why the law is even relevant to the story. The law obviously didn't properly restrain the child, nor was the law successful in compelling the mother to do so. What exactly was gained, then, by the presence of a law in this case? The ability to layer another pinprick of misfortune in the form of a fine upon the mother who is most likely already distraught that her baby is in the hospital due to her carelessness?

It's really one of those things I don't understand about people.

Why the heck do they have to be coerced/bribed to take care of themselves and others?

Everytime I get in my car I put on the seat belt on auto, but when I ask people to do the same a good chunk of them replies with things about how police doesn't really fine people for not putting the seat belt on.

I don't give an f if police or anyone else is going to charge me money, I'm just interested in my safety and it would probably be a good idea if they were too.

Like when people start spouting all that religious crap about the 10 comandments and the such, and saying people shouldn't do these and that because of them and because the <insert religious figure> says god says so, not because x act is inherently wrong and adverse to society.

So, seeing things like that I can't help but to think religions and all the other organizations profiting and taking advantage of that sort of behavior are right about exploiting people's stupidity.

                But I digress.

In other words those women should have their kids taken from them and forced to pay child support to the state for taking care of them or something like that. Maybe the financial part of the equation would be enough to "convince" them to do what should be common sense.

Oddly enough, I actually had a dream about this last night.

It was basically "goddamn, I thought I wanted some stupid laws". Luckily, I've forgotten just what stupid things they were going to far in trying to outlaw.

Yes the theory is very strong but the actual application will fail. It will fail because of this little nugget:

A wise man is made, not born.

That means that he or she has to be raised in a home that cares about morals, gives the children boundaries, teaches them right from wrong, gives them respect, and on and on and on. The base problem with our society right now is that a large portion of it doesn't think of the impact of their actions on their children. Then these children grow up and our society suffers for it in so many different ways.

To think most kids that come to this world shouldn't have been "created" in the first place because their parents simply weren't ready for the responsability. And that's just me saying it politely.

But then all the solutions for it would need to rely on unreliable systems created by an unreliable society of unreliable people, so it's like the old saying says: We get what we deserve.

Even if we try our best to live for "me" it's always about "we" and you can't escape that no matter what you do... unless you kill yourself that is.

                          Given you don't end up in <insert after life place> with a bunch of other people. <_<;

Certainly parenting plays a factor, but I would point out that crooked people can come from good, loving families and people can still develop virtue in depraved situations. Rather I think most of a person's character develops from what works in their social setting, and this guy would almost certainly agree: Philip Zimbardo shows how people become monsters ... or heroes | Video on TED.com This is Philip Zimbardo, psychologist and author of The Lucifer Principle. You can skip to about 7:30 and not miss the meat of the talk, or to 16:40 for the tl;dl. Basically he says that according to tests that control for background, destructive behavior arises from a set of factors that include diffusion of personal responsibility, blind obedience to authority, and uncritical conformity to group norms, all of which I would argue are promoted in a society which relies on strict adherence to rule sets complex enough to be considered a script of behavior to enforce proper self-conduct on the populace rather than promoting personal judgment. You could even go so far as to say that the bad parenting itself develops from this atmosphere.

I work with kids/teens and I have to unfortunately deal with the parents at times. I guess you can say that this makes me jaded. Change starts from the bottom up and until we can get better parenting going, there is little that is going to change in our society. Yes there are occurrences where someone had a decent upbringing and they turn out to be the opposite but its just not how it works the majority of the time. Also parents can say that they did everything right but the hardest thing to do is to look in the mirror sometimes and admit your faults. I know I'm a good parent, but I'm far from perfect. Some choices I made when my daughter was young changed her forever....and not for the better. It's one of my regrets. Parents/family have such a HUGE impact on a child's development. It lessens as the child gets older and explores the world more but the impact never ends.
