And higher taxes for beer, drinks and smokes.

As long as a good part of that money does go to treatment and insurance of all the people who become collateral of some self-destructive people's addictions, that is.

Lol like the pun, here in teh Uk we are taxed heavily on alcahol.

The consumer has to pay 15% VAT on teh beer and a 27% tax on top baid by the brewer which is directly passed onto us so basically out of each beer the government gets 42%. Its even higher on spirits and fags.

Let's also tax people who don't do community service.

Hey, if you're going to be exercising, you might as well contribute to your community while you're at it. And if you're not willing to contribute to your community with your time and efforts, you should be willing to contribute with your wallet.

As insurance coverage is laughable really.

But then again maybe things work different over there, here many times the victims are treated worse than the addicts, and human rights only protect the damn criminals but send absolutely no one to see if victims are being treated fairly. So I guess that's why I'm biased towards that kinda stuff.

Fortunately it hasn't happened to my family or to me, but just seeing and hearing the horror stories is enough to make you get pissed about it.

Eaaaasy, let's make a network of Gym/Electricity stations all across the country. Remember that gym that had all their machines set up to generate electricity while people exercised? That would help the environment without having people feeling like they are actually doing community service.

By the way how is it in the States, do you have Military service and Community service or nothing like that? Here military service is obligatory but it's rather fun really, only problem is you have to jump way too many hoops to own a firearm here (unless you are a drug dealer that is, they can buy them freely from the US .)

the US doesn't have any sort of compulsory service. We have Selective Service, the draft, but IIRC that hasn't been used since the 70s, and it's only there for wars. Men from 18-35ish are legally required to sign up; but if you actually are drafted, there's about 1001 ways to disqualify yourself.

No people join the military of their own free will in the U.S. Men do have to register with the government once they turn 18 though. That way if there was a war and they did institute a draft, they'd have a list of names already. *Feba beat me to it *

Community Service is also optional here. I personally think it should be mandatory for a length of time every year for every adult. Putting in a couple hours at the food pantry every month isn't gonna kill anyone damn it. I do a lot of volunteer work and it aggravates me to no end how hard it is to get help.

After spending 40 hours a week working with bitchy old women in retail, I'll be damned if I have to spend my days off working with yet more of the general public, even for an hour, if it's not my own spirit that moves me to do it.

I hate the general public. I only work among them because I have bills. I much preferred my campus-job position where I just put in the data off the new apps. No people other than my boss coming in now and again to bring mail, no phones ringing, and no people bitching or treating me as sub-human. Just music, and me doing a job. I was infinitely happier. If it wasn't minimum wage + required to be a student to keep, I would have stayed.

Now, if there's some natural disaster and I feel moved to go and assist, that's one thing. I've wanted to in the past, but couldn't afford the loss of paycheck. Once my bills are fewer, perhaps. Forcing people to volunteer is just asking to have a bunch of people pissed off and making lives miserable for all concerned, though. I'd rather have willing people do a job, even if they're harder to find, than a bunch of people coerced into it by laws or threat of having to pay in yet more money, especially in our current economic climate.

Well, on the positive side of things we have worked things out with my sister. While she is still going to move out of the house, she'll do so while being on very good terms with us. And it's more of a factor that she's found like the perfect little apartment when she went out to look earlier. The issue in the end was more one of miscommunication and on her end, wanting to avoid conflict, which led to more miscommunication.

I'm glad it's over and we've worked things out. I love my sister and my family and I don't like to see them causing each other so much pain. Plus that was more conflict than I care to deal with.

The flour and sugar canister were stuck so hard to the counter by filth that I had pry them off.
No need for pictures TGM, the above tells me alot about the state of your kitchen. /comfort

This Prince of Persia game sounds interesting. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to rent a PS3 and a Xbox360 at some point, and some games for both of them, and just try out which one I like better.

Right now, the main selling points for each of them are:

                          Xbox360:

                          Pros

                          Halo 2/3
                          Misc games

                          Cons

Needs Xbox Live to play multiplayer online, so most likely that Halo 2/3 and Misc multiplayer games just became single player games for me, which does detract a bit from them.

Sounds like getting a reliable working Xbox360 is a pain in the ass.

                          PS3

                          Pros

Backward compatability with most PS2 games or so I've heard. Unknown about PS games.
                          Lair
Most likely the main platform for future FF games
                          Misc games

                          Cons

Expensive. Which, if I were getting a BluRay player, isn't that bad. However I do not plan on getting a BluRay player, I am solely looking at the gaming aspect, and just as a gaming platform, it's still rather pricey.

On the plus side it seems that most of the games I am interested in are available on both platforms. So as far as I know right now, the above pros and cons are the main distinguishing points to me for each platform.

I personally think it should be mandatory for a length of time every year for every adult. Putting in a couple hours at the food pantry every month isn't gonna kill anyone damn it.
                          I dunno.

I have a couple of issues with it. I don't work for free unless it's my own personal choice. No one should be able to sit there and tell me that I have to. Telera brings up a very valid point that I have seen alot of, so I will not be bringing up the general bitchy public. Although you'll be getting some of those stories from the airlines sometime soon I suspect, we're about to get into the air rage stuff in my airline operations class.

Also I have issues cleaning up after people who are too lazy to do so themselves, and trying to avoid having people taking advantage of me.

It sounds like a noble cause, but I don't think it is. I think that there are alot of things that need to be taken care of or fixed before community service becomes mandatory.

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

One of my coworkers came in and told me that this asshole supervisor, that works in a different department, backed into my car and kept going...I mean seriously man wtf. At least have the decency to leave a note or something. Its bad enough that the asshole knows nobody's name except the people who really matter, bastard called me Chris the other day and there's nobody and I mean nobody that works in our entire building is named Chris. [/Fume] Anyways, I'm glad my car is a cast iron tank that actually has a metal bumper, I hope it left a dent in his car.

                              I see.

Here military service is mandatory but it doesn't last long, you get to spend some time doing (light, very) military training and they teach you how to use guns. But in recent years it's been more community service-like and more focused to teaching people (specially adults in low resource communities) how to read and elementary math. Also re-foresting activities and stuff.

I personally think community service is a good thing as long as its managed properly and focused on the good of the city/country. That literacy project really helped bring the amount of people with basic reading/math skills a bit higher. Although some critiziced it because it did so at the expense of trimming down the military aspects of the service.

Also, it would be unlikely for adults to make time in their obligations for it, but young adults at school (ages 16-19) should do local community service as part of their formation in my opinion. It would at least encourage a bigger sense of belonging in the community, because kids these days are waaaay too disconected from whats going on around them.

But it varies from culture to culture of course, I don't know if that would work in the US, but I like the Japanese approach to the subject.
