Speaking of cleaning it inside, how would I go about that? Canned air doesn't do jackshit to fix the problem, and I'm sure my fan could use a good dusting.

Should I just shut it down and unscrew it? Is there some special precautions I should take with it? Laptop maintenance scares me. I don't mind opening up my PC because it's a lot harder to really fuck that up, but the laptop can be so touchy. :/

You can safely clean your laptop if you're careful, unscrew it and take a good look at it on the inside, use a cotton tipped applicant to reach tiny spots that might be gathering dust. Some paper tissue might also be a good idea since its light and leaves no dust behind, if you use a cloth it might leave bits of cotton behind which are messy.

When I say open your laptop, I don't mean unscrew every bolt and clean every crevice, you should only look for your fan and heat sink which are very much to blame for many laptop overheating problems, they look like this:



My laptop gathers tons of dust on the heat sink, they come out very easily. You should be able to use canned air on these.

Step by step to clean your laptop:
Extend your laptop's life! Clean the dust out of its heat sink.

Well its offical, 8600m overheated ~_~
Nothing shows on the screen when booting up.
Time to see if HP will replace the card seeing how google turned up many hits of that series being prone to do this.

Damn sweetie, so sorry that happened to you. ; ; Is the laptop still under warranty? I hope so. If they fix it maybe you could get one of the coolers to put under it for those long late night sessions.

Nope, lolwarrenty ended a month ago. Always happens, warrent ends shit breaks. Well at least I got luck and found the only copy of FFXI Vana'diel collection today for the ps2, since my desktop lags like hell figured I'll just go to ps2 until I either upgrade the ram or get the laptop fixed. Since I've heard people who had the same card got theirs done for free after their warrenties ended.

Well I hope you can get it fixed for free. Do some research and find other people that were in similar situations and got theirs fixed. Armed with that, contact them and be persistant. If they drag their feet, then remind them of all the failures this system/card has had. Good luck kiddo and let us know how it all goes down.

Due to the 4-6 inches of snow we got last night all the schools are closed lol. Since I work for a school district I got the day off.

So today is the first day of my last month working here, they're laying me off the day after christmas basically...however my boss who went with the group that got moved to the other location had to start there today, which means for the last month I get to work here pretty much entirely unsupervised. The nice thing is this lets me spend some time redoing my resumé and job hunting while at work, but it's going to be a struggle to get any actual work done.

so I gots me a laptop. Dell Vostro A860. First one in four or five years (previous laptop died right around the time I tried to get FFXI working on it)

For being under $400, it's pretty zippy so far. 16:9 screen looks great on widescreen stuff. Battery life is pretty short; I could probably boost it if I wanted, but it's alright.

Ubuntu does greatly on it. Wireless didn't work out of the box, fixed it in ten minutes of googling, and copying and pasting four or five lines.

Broke off the page down key trying to get a crumb out from under it, was kind of a pain in the ass to put back on, but frankly if not being able to pop keys off is the most annoying thing about it, I'll be very happy with it.

Oh, and I was just able to drag and drop my mozilla config directory onto it, so I have all my plugins and settings for firefox without the hours of comparing my desktop to the new stuff, so yes
