Feba, yeah Obama is going to win. Only thing I can hope for now is dems don't get a filibuster proof senate, because that would just be fubar'd on a whole new level. However, I've read a lot of reports in recent weeks about how a lot of experts think the polls this year are pretty unreliable. I've seen as much as 10% variance b/w different companies' polls on the same day. Yes, they all have Obama ahead, but there's also a big difference between Obama: 47% McCain 45%, to Obama 53% McCain 41%. I don't know if I believe it, but some have said they think people are saying Obama in the poll because they don't want people to think they're a racist, but will then likely put McCain when they actually vote. If thats true, then people are just stupid.
I just know I'll laugh my ass off if Murtha loses tomorrow. Seriously, how mentally challenged do you have to be to call your constituents racists and rednecks only a couple weeks before you're up for re-election?

I recommend you go check out fivethirtyeight.com. They're very busy with the election, but they've got MONTHS of posts on stuff like this. Explaining margins of error, house effects (one pollster leaning more towards one candidate, without bias or twisting the numbers), and so on. The thing you mention about secret racist voters is called the Bradley effect, which they have discussed. What I see looks interesting, I'd mostly been using Gallup since I've done a few Gallup surveys before and they seemed to be the most neutral with how they asked their questions.

As we learned in 2000 though, the popular vote doesn't mean crap.



In order for McCain to win, he needs to claim every single gray toss-up state, and, in addition, take back Colorado from Obama. If he loses a single toss-up(under 11), he needs to take Pennsylvania and every other toss-up. If he loses something important like Florida, it's all over.

Why would a filibuster prrof majority be "fubar'd"? I would think that it's just fair that we give the Democrats the chance to fuck up like we did Shrub. Good God in a measly 8 years he'a managed to destroy the worlds best military, the worlds biggest economy and the worlds mst well thought of culture.

Why shouldn't the Democrats have a chance to tranform us into Sweden? I realize the partially toothed and crimson necked will fight being forced into the 21st century tooth and nail, but it has to happen eventually folks.

Mostly what sickens me is the rampant ignorance. When I hear "joe the dipshit" spout off about why he's voting for McLame, all that goes through my mind is "I.D.I.O.T." Because "Joe the moron" clearly never took an economics class, nor does he have a basic grasp of mathematics.

A. because one party was never meant to have an unstoppable decision in the government. Its been meant to be a multi-party system ever since the beginning. Thats why there are checks and balances.

B. Been over why the majority of the current economic situation has nothing to do with the Bush administration in another thread. To recap:
Housing crisis. All the foreclosures recently are due to policies made by the previous president. They loosened requirements for receiving home loans with the Democrat's endorsement Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac gave loans to people who they KNEW could not pay them off. Loans go unpayed, houses are foreclosed on, and you have the overwhelming catalyst that has hurt the economy.
When is a polar extreme ever the answer? Usually the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

Mind you, the US elected officials seem willing enough to put the good of their region before party affiliations if not given a certain amount of convincing. That tends not to happen here in Canada, which is why I'm just as happy with a minority government...

Multiparty doesn't mean two parties though. That's pretty fucked up by itself. Ignoring what the founding fathers intended for political parties, they certainly didn't intend for a system where people are basically forced to choose between their vote meaning squat, or voting for people they might not like much.

Anyway, it's important to remember that the checks and balance system is dependent on the branches of government, not the parties within them. Within the branches, having people arguing over power doesn't really help much. I mean, look at the past two years. Democratic majority with neocon president. Can't get much done at all. You're also assuming that people always vote with their party, which isn't the case-- especially when you look at things that would make voting with your party potentially dangerous, the bailout bill being a recent example.
