Re: Official bored at work / just shooting the shit / no rails to derail thread
Ok Aksannyi, that pic is ever so slightly disturbing... >o.0<
And as for me, I've been feeling in a creative mood that I haven't felt in a long, long time.
Back when I was a wee lad, I really wanted to be a game designer. I thought that'd be one of the coolest jobs ever, to think up new games and breath life into new worlds and characters. So, I started working on a game of my own, creating civilizations, working on backstory, all that fun stuff. It was a fun way to pass the time and it got my mind off of alot of problems in the family that were going on at the time.
I learned that you always want to create a backup of your work however the hard way. After spending several years working on my game, off and on mind you, but still alot of time, and my computer crashed, and I lost almost everything I had on it. Years of work, and all the changes it had undergone from a single player game, to a multiplayer game once I had heard about the internet, just gone.
Needless to say I was a bit bummed about that, and didn't much feel like trying to recreate everything. Too, when I brought it up with my Dad he was more like, "What's the use of a game designer? Like that'll get you a job" and more or less talked me out of it.
However, lately I've been wanting to pick it back up. I've still got most of the general ideas in my head, those aren't lost. I just lost most of the details of the histories, NPCs, world geography/town maps, and stuff along those lines. The general geography and the feel of each town/race though, I still remember.
One of the kinda neat things though is to see how other people have implemented my ideas in other games. Some of them are just like I imagined they would be, others I think they could have done better, and some have had interesting twists that I either wouldn't or didn't think of.
And to clarify that, not that I've done any work on games mind you, but just, I've had the same ideas that a number of games have used, and it's interesting to see how the Pros did it vs what I had thought of and how I'd do it.
Playing some of these games has also fixed some of the issues I was having, for instance FFXI has most likely fixed my dillema over whether or not to tie the game's economy to NPC prices or have a player based economy, and how to hopefully solve a few of the gil related problems.
So yeah, I'm looking forward to getting my hands messy again
