Timmy is what we in R&D call the "power gamer." Timmy likes to win big. He doesn’t want to eke out a last minute victory. Timmy wants to smash his opponents. He likes his cards to be impressive, and he enjoys playing big creatures and big spells.

Timmy cares more about the quality of his win than the quantity of his wins. For example, Timmy sits down and plays ten games. He only wins three games out of ten but the three he wins, he dominates his opponent. Timmy had fun. Timmy walks away happy.

Johnny is the creative gamer to whom Magic is a form of self-expression. Johnny likes to win, but he wants to win with style. It’s very important to Johnny that he win on his own terms. As such, it’s important to Johnny that he’s using his own deck. Playing Magic is an opportunity for Johnny to show off his creativity.

Johnny likes a challenge. Johnny enjoys winning with cards that no one else wants to use. He likes making decks that win in innovative ways. What sets Johnny apart from the other profiles is that Johnny enjoys deckbuilding as much as (or more than) he enjoys playing. Johnny loves the cool interactions of the cards. He loves combo decks. Johnny is happiest when he’s exploring uncharted territory.

Like Timmy, Johnny cares more about the quality of his wins than the quantity. For example, let's say Johnny builds a new deck that has a neat but difficult way to win. He plays ten games and manages to get his deck to do its thing… once. Johnny walks away happy.

Spike is the competitive player. Spike plays to win. Spike enjoys winning. To accomplish this, Spike will play whatever the best deck is. Spike will copy decks off the Internet. Spike will borrow other players’ decks. To Spike, the thrill of Magic is the adrenalin rush of competition. Spike enjoys the stimulation of outplaying the opponent and the glory of victory.

Spike cares more about the quantity of wins than the quality. For example, Spike plays ten games and wins nine of them. If Spike feels he should have won the tenth, he walks away unhappy.

Ice, I hate you. Have you sent them off to be graded, by chance? Even if they're only rated 7 or so (which is considered NM) of a scale of 10 (Mint Gem), it will roughly double the price of them, since they're encased in a tamper-proof plastic container. Though, they'll only grade cards (any cards) from Alpha, Beta, Unlimited (the prequel to the sucky edition set known as Revised, the two of which should NEVER be confused) and Arabian Nights.

My power 9 are all Beta.

And, after reading the mini-article over the gamers, I'm defiantly a Johnny. The deck I have is based on a 3 card combo: Mind Over Matter, Tim (Prodigal Sorcerer) and Curiosity. Speaking of, I'm looking at the current B&R list for Type 1/1.5, and I see Mind Over Matter is no longer banned! My deck is now tourny legal! Unless I slipped in some other cards in there on the list since at the time it was illegal anyway. I'll have to check that...

Edit: Bah, never mind. The site I'm looking at for my B&R list is wrong. It's Restricted from Type 1, Banned from type 1.5 and Extended.

Beta >>> Alpha.

Alpha cards aren't allowable in sanctioned tournaments due to their different corner cuts.

The rarity distribution on Alpha is rarer, of course, but it's actually much harder to acquire a full set of good condition Beta than Alpha.

heh i have my cards lying around in my mom's basement somewhere. started playing from antiquities and was a very heavy consumer. after college i stopped since 1) all my friends cashed out and quit 2) cards where taking up too much space.

yeah, every so often i'd have the urge to play again, but thinking more about the digital version now so i don't have so much clutter.

I'd probably be closest to a Johnny, but that would again be applying to YGO CCG, not MTG. I've thought about picking up another card game, but I don't think that kind of money would be worth it. Honestly, I'd rather play WoW than any of the CCGs i've seen, especially as far as costs go...

Vorthos cares about the art/flavor text of the cards, while Melvin is all about understanding the rules of the game.

And Evi, if you are interested, by all means check it out. Most of the stuff I have are crap commons/uncommons, I don't have many things like go for more than a buck. the Emerald is the most valuable card I have by a long shot. I know I used to own a Birds of Paradise and a Sliver Queen (the queen I got just after slivers came out), but I traded one and sold the other. Now that I actually know the market (and that slivers would come back in... what was it, Onslaught?), I really wish I wouldn't have.

Sure I'm interested in bulk. What do you think you'd sell them for?

I had a huge box of magic cards one of my cousins gave me, I tried playing, but it just didn't interest me. I got more into the YGO CCG, but tournaments were boring, and I lost interest in it just as quickly as I did the show. I still need to sell those cards, I could probably get something nice with that much cash...

What would you want to get rid of them for? And, what do you think are some of the quality cards in the stack?

I'm still trying to kick this damn game ugh. I'm finalizing my last R/U Jhoira deck and selling the rest on Ebay.

WotC has gotten enough of my money over the years, it's time to cut them off. My problem is I'm a "Johny" for those who know what the MTG personalities are (there's 5) so every time I see shiny new cards, or what's newly legal in standard *cough* tenth edition *cough* I get all excited with deck ideas... and then the money gets spent... and then I slap myself and cry for wasting my money.

I'm the same way. DON'T SELL! you'll always regret it. Every time you get back in. Especially because the reprint old cards in new sets these days...

What would you want to get rid of them for?

Magic never really interested me. It has some beautiful artwork, but the rules are a bit too complex for my tastes, I prefer games to be simple. My favorite games are things like Go, Katamari, easy to learn, hard to master kinda stuff. Also, I was twelve, you honestly expect me to take a bunch of beautiful artworks over my favorite cartoon characters?

And, what do you think are some of the quality cards in the stack?

As far as rarity, or condition? I took them into a card shop once, they only wanted to buy three or four of them out of the entire box. Most of them were in fairly good shape, as I remember. I don't remember what happened to them, I might've given them away, tossed 'em out, sold them to someone for a few bucks, or just lost them when I reused the box for the aforementioned YGO cards.

EDIT: Wait, was that response about the YGO cards or the MTG cards?

MTG, no doubt.

Once I'm don't organizing all my cards (I'm currently done with Blue, Black, White, and "Miscellaneous," which would be Artifacts, Non-basic lands, Golds and Double cards, and I'm working on Greens at the moment, so I only have Red and the rest of these greens), I'll have a better ballpark figure. But, by current estimations, my entire set (that I have completed, as said above), is worth about $6000. This doesn't include a hundreds of singles that I have sold and haven't removed from the online database. All said and done, maybe $10,000? I think that should help me get over my MTG addiction quite nicely.

They didn't really reprint the power 9, but they did make a lot of "fixed" versions in the most recent expansion. Like Lotus Blossom, just like Black Lotus but can't come out until turn 3.

I for one propose that you spend that money on a pimped out PC, and then give that to me.
