  • Moving and Towing

So, as long as things stay good with my girlfriend and I (which, I see no reason they won't be), I'll be moving out to Witchita, KS here in December. With me currently living between two houses (mine in Charleston, SC and my parents in Harrisonburg, VA), with stuff divided up between the two just about evenly (all my stuff in SC can fit in my car). It looks like I'll be renting a Uhaul to pack up my stuff and move the 1300 miles to the middle of the United states. I'm excited.

But,I guess that boils down to my question, I don't want to have to drive that distance twice, it's about a 14-15 hour drive doable in 1 sitting, but that dosn't sound friendly. How would someone go about towing their 6 across country? Would it be cheaper/safer (I have little towing experience, and I really hate big trucks, and towing something, wouldn't be very friendly I think) to just ship my car out there?

I drive a 2004 Mazda 6, FWD car. What do you guys think?

I think you're going to be renting a van, or take the trip twice.

We shall see. I'm posting on the Mazda 6 Club forums as well, they are advising me to ship my stuff and drive my 6 across country./

That's the more expensive option, certainly.

If you don't have a friend that you trust (to drive either your car or the truck for you), you'll probably have to just make the trip twice. Once with your stuff, and then again with the truck.

That or you can hire a moving company to drive your stuff for you.

Please don't move to Kansas, it sucks. You have no idea how badly I want to get out. I'm considering moving to Idaho ffs.

While I wouldn't want to live in Kansas, I'm sure there are people who do enjoy living there.

              No. No, there really aren't.

Name one person who enjoys living here and has a choice.

What's wrong with Idaho? I rather like it.

But,I guess that boils down to my question, I don't want to have to drive that distance twice, it's about a 14-15 hour drive doable in 1 sitting, but that dosn't sound friendly. So as I understand it, everything can fit in one Uhaul truck, which you can drive, but then you have to leave your normal car behind?

What I'd do is get a friend, GF, family member, someone, to drive one of these for you. Say you take the Uhaul, they take the other car, and you both head off to Kansas and they take a flight back home.

If possible you might want to see if your GF might fly out and drive back with you, take your time with it and have a nice little romantic trip while you're at it. Pack along a nice picnic lunch if there are any scenic/nice spots you know of along the way, have fun with it

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

This argument is silly. There are people who actually want to live there, Feba.

On a serious note, if you must move to Kansas, make sure your home has a basement. Not joking.

                              Re: Moving and Towing

option 1 rent uhaul or ryder truck. rent tow dolly for car and just tow car behind truck. probaly best and cheapest option.
option 2 rent truck. if you look around on ebay motors there are car moving /delivery services. they are fairly cheap. im guessing approximately $600 to get your car there. you or someone else would have to drop it off at the pick up spot. they then load it on a car carrier and haul it to a drop off area near where you are going. good luck with things i really hate moving myself even if its just across the street.
