were all different from different cultures, backgrounds, attitudes with things to one person would be nothing could be insulting, attacking or even go against their religeous/social backgrounds to others.
People need to start realising this in what is now a global community.
For example of a simple thing that gets up my nose. Murphy posted about the hospital cathcing fire on the said post, now he realises now that that was probably not a good thing to say as it may have upset BBQ and also it struck a nerve with me being a (now ex) fireman, who had to deal with alot of serious fire related incidents which does include a serious fire in a local hospital 3 years ago

It goes both ways. You can't expect that someone in a global community to bend over backwards to take into account every damn persons silly little hookups.

I'm refusing to comment here. I wasn't online - I was too busy in another fandom area. I'm probably on BBQ's ignore list, and my association with Murphie is well known. Both have probably gone too far, and I hope they find a way to resolve this and both apologise to each other.

As far as I know, things have been settled, at least on my end. You've never been on my ignore list, I don't look down on people by who they associate with. I just lose respect for leaders who will tolerate seedy behavior within a group.

My only comment is actually to the mods. I don't care if someone asks "Is the IP address this?" and a quote of IP address. For you to confirm this, effectively giving out an IP address to someone who has no use for it would be breaking the Data Protection Act in the UK, and I anywhere I would consider it a gross invasion of privacy. I'm shocked that it was even considered.

Invasion of Privacy has such a flimsy set of interpetations. It could tapping your phoneline, listening in on a neighbor's conversation, installing keyloggers on your PC and these situations take place with things that typically don't change. And, as we've stated constantly to our Swedish friends, the internet is global, you can't expect your laws to hold water everywhere in the world.

That aside, without IP tracking, you could never deal with RMT bots on this site and others, hell, MMORPGs would be even more overrun with RMT than they are now. And IPs can be changed so you can never truely be removed from accessing a site.

I've have tracked the IPs of legitimate trolls on my linkshell forum before. Someone thinking they can just make a sockpuppet account and talk shit. I tracked the IP to general area in which he lived, but it was a considerably large area, the radius was dozens of miles wide. All it did was confirm my suspicions.

Internet Service providers can actually look at your desktop, even in the UK and its totally legit. Why should they not? If they couldn't they couldn't make you pay for access or help you with your connection problems. Furthermore, these forums are private property, why should they not know your IP address if you step out of their rules?

My point is this, when you log on, you have to give up privacy. Most sites just want to know the other sites I visit and they track that. It could be much worse and I know service providers and corporations that actually want much worse and it's an infringement on any culture founded on democracy - our freedom of speech.

Not in the EU it doesn't. The definitions of invasion of privacy are draconian and have some stupid exceptions for the government, but they are clearly spelled out.

Using the normally logged IPs of your visitors for a certain amount of control on your own site is fine, giving that information to someone else is a very different matter.

I visit many many sites, I'm admin/moderator on a few. I have used IP addresses to try to track down. I have access to the IP addresses of everyone who posts on my blogs. My ISP wants to look at my desktop - fine. I have a LOVELY pic of the gorgeous Philip Glenister there - feel free. Share and share alike!

I don't object to the stated moderators/admin having access to my IP address - that is expected on any site. My issues comes with the wanton giving out (confirmation, whatever) of an IP address to someone else who is not an admin/mod. It should never have been a) asked for and b) confirmed. That is the invasion of privacy. Are you going to give it to someone advertising RMT sites if they ask? No, of course not. So what is the difference to what you did? You may say there is a difference, but really is there? That is my objection. I would be horrified if it happened to me.

You used this information to ban Murphie from another site. An abuse of your power there. You took a personal argument here elsewhere - with no reason. He hadn't posted there for months by your and his own admission, nor had he done anything there worthy of banning. Whatever moral high ground you had (for the record, I know Murphie didn't necessarily mean anything by it, but I felt the comment was a bit overboard), you lost it then. I walked away from my last linkshell when the old leader, who hosted our ls site, abused his power in exactly the same way, and banned people for no reason whatsoever - then allowed his online b/f to do the same.

You have the right to know if someone is going to be a problem. Trust me, there are people on LBR that could be a problem, I know of thier reputation here, I don't need to confirm their IP. I did it more to the end of just making sure I didn't ban someone of the same name because the post there didn't jibe with the posts I see here.

And really, this is part of what pissed my off about Murphie posting a PM in the beginning. Its not only not professional, it now places needless, pointless drama on someone else.

Delete the quoted PM.

Whoop de do. It has no barring elsewhere, you cannot impose law in other regions. That's one of the core reasons for the fall of the Roman and British Empires, not to mention what instigated the American Revolution - they tried to do that and the natives didn't appreciate it.

I always thought that with the setup of windows xp, the only way an ISP or anyone else can look at and even control your desktop remotely, was if you gave them permission to do it... I just recalled there being a function, but I don't think that anyone would [or should] be able to look into that sort of personal space without having some sort of signed agreement or some such with the owner of the computer.

I have no reason to until the post is edited, by mod or by Murphie himself. I made my feelings clear, disclosed them in private and he posted them on a public forum. That is a bitch move on his part and that's a whole apology that needs to be made in itself.

You seem to be more concerned about IP addys being traded than private messages remaining private.
