I'm not talking about super mods, we have plenty of those and I love they they are involved community members ulmike mods on must sites. But I have yet to see a single moderator on all of FFXIO! Why is that?

I asked task mage, basically it seems that mods are for specific areas, and smods are for teh entire site. Honestly there's no difference except power level... and considering FFXIO is a fairly small site, I doubt there's any need to provide moderators to a single forum.Comment

But there's no real point. FFXIO has mostly enough moderators, they only need one or two more to cover time slots when there's not many others on.
Honestly, if and when FFXIO needs more mods, that's up to PiNG and Aksyogin to find them, not us to vote on them. Just because someone has a high post count or is involved in the community doesn't make them a good candidate for mod.Comment

Trust me, I'm starting to think moderating is 10% getting people to play nice and 90% weeding out people who link to porn sites.

Very true. On another forum (at which I am not a moderator, but I wouldn't want to be because it's so big!) a lot of people beg to be mods all the time. I think the setup here works well enough. There has been a bit of uneven coverage during certain times of the day lately, but when the mods are here, they take care of things well enough for me.
Considering the size of the site, Super Moderators make more sense than regular moderators. If there were a lot more people here, and certain forums were far busier than others (general and maybe the class boards or something) I could see adding mods specific to those forums, but really that's just not the case.

To give you a definitive answer:
Moderators cover specific forums. Super Moderators can go into any forum.
Technically speaking, FFXIOnline has no Moderators, only Super Moderators (we did away with non-Super Moderators a while back as it ended up being unnecessary).
As for the need of moderation: which comes first, the chicken or the egg?
A well-behaved membership that doesn't need additional moderation is usually the result of good moderation.
