    Re: "300" Spartans.... wtf?

Ok, so the move was out already.

    Who saw it?

I did, and I must admit, for a movie, it was great. I knew it wasn't based on history, so I didn't hold that up against the movie. I wasn't disappointed because I knew Frank Miller was behind it. The visual were really nice, I thought.

    Here's some trivia for ya.

Director Zack Snyder says that fighting styles and formations (particularly the Spartan's phalanx) were purposefully changed - making them historically inaccurate - so they'd "look cool" and work better for movie purposes.

The film was shot in 60 days. Post Production took almost a year.

The filmmakers used bluescreen 90% of the time, and greenscreen for 10%. Mostly blue for the lighting, and because the red capes stood out more.

The main Spartan warrior went through a rigorous 6 week training program before shooting the film to make them look like they do in the film.

In the year 4580, when the Martian Human Colony is at semi-high tensions with the Ceres Human Colony, the Martians will accuse the Ceresese that a movie about Operation Iraqi Freedom was funded by them and is actually a propagation movie against the Martians, who the United Galaxy Confederation won't allow possession of Level-8 "Gaia-splinter" Lazers(which are capable of destroying small moons).

The movie will feature 2000 American barely armored soldiers as they fight the Iraqi Resistance who use Black Magic and Demons to fight. The central character will be President-King W Bush, who personally slays the demons with a magical sword. He also has a sex scene with Queen of Israel at the time, Madonna.

I enjoyed 300. I just don't really talk about much besides FFXI here. I have a few other forums and outlets for film, TV, and most often, books.

But anyway. It was pretty good. I enjoyed the film, from a purely entertainment standpoint. It was pretty faithful to the source material, even though it was not historically accurate. But since I knew that it wouldn't be, I wasn't all worked up.

        Good stuff, I'd recommend it.

I'd recommend that if it's an option. This film would really benefit from the IMAX experience.

And speaking of historical accuracy. They didnt show Xerxes have Leonaidas get beheaded and crucified either after they fell at the Battle of Thermopylae. Hey, where are those Greeks in outrage?

To be up in arms about the armor they wore (or didnt wear)... that's kinda lame.

                        Re: "300" Spartans.... wtf?

My friend was really crazy about it. I went to see it but I didn't enjoy it that much.
Interesting action scene and all but.... the slow motion was too much.
I fell asleep in the middle of fight scene -_-;; Seriously.

                        Everytime a sword/spear moves, there's slow motion.

And they over used bloom/flare effect.... they are also everywhere.

The sub plot cutting back to Spartan was so stupid.....

Over all I give it 3/10.

King Leonidas was weakenned a lot with his actions in the film.
Now I'm basing this on the comic.... King Leonidas was a really strong character.

He killed the messenger without any hestitation. In the film he looked uncertain what to do and even had to look at his wife looking pathetic.

He also left Spartan being very proud of his decision. In the film, he was like, uhhhh we're going for a walk lol. He again looked uncertain about his desicion and had to come up with stupid lies. No sense of pride in his character.

When saying goodbye to his wife, Leonidas knew exactly that he was going to die. He only tell his wife to "find a new man." In the movie tho he looked sad.... even needed a commentary to speak for him. To add sympathy? I think it makes him look even more pathetic.

Anyway they ruined Leonidas character for good in the film.

I like the sound track... that's about it.

I actually liked the slow motion, especially once they came out of their formation from the entrance of the path.

I also like the soundtrack. I think Nine Inch Nails contributed the "rock" sounds.

Have you read the comic Jei?

Well, everything just must be stupid stupid stupid.
To the movie's credit, a lot of things were historically accurate. The uses of laconic wit was cool. A lot of the lines leonaidas used were said to have been actually said. The Immortals were an actual part of Xerxes army as well as the traitor who defected to the persians. There's more but I wont bore you with it since it's probably just stupid.

And looking to his wife for resolve isnt weak. I'm not sure how you view women but I think he was looking back to reassure himself that his decision was right. That what he was about to do (step into war) was right. Because sending your people into war isnt something like wanting eggs or bacon in the morning. It kind of a tough thing to decide on at a moments notice dont you think?

In the end its up to the viewer to determine its entertainment value but to bash the movie cuz its historically inaccurate is lame, considering it was adapted from a Graphic Novel aka. a really long comic. I mean seriously, I wonder how wolverine would really feel about being played by someone who is WAY taller than him.

Frank Miller is a comic book writer, a very good one at that but keep in mind that comics are all about fantasy, not historical accuracy.

Since 300 draws a lot of the curiousity to see it from a famious historical battle accuracy is a fair critism. I don't consider it at the top of my list but everyones tolerance for changes in what you are expecting is different. I didn't have a problem with the ammount of changing in this one, but more extreame such as the 300 surviving the battle and killing all the Persions I would have taken issue over for example.

Haven't seen this myself yet, but just watching the trailer it *SCREAMS* that there will be little to no historical accuracy involved. It's an action flick with a very unique style behind it, something that stands out imo. It definately feels like it's taken from a comic with it's vivid and contrasting colors and liberal use of the slow mo shot. But in the end this movie has no political or historical bearing as it's made just to entertain the audience.

I think what Jei meant was that because Leonidas needed that 'reassurance'. It's not a knock towards women or anything, it was pointing out how in the comic the King seemed to have more confidence and in the film he seemed to doubted himself. You are correct that the decision to go to war is a difficult one, but being able to make that decision with 100% confidence and no hesitation as opposed to pausing and needing 'reassurence' shows a higher measure of personal 'strength'. So those moments of hesitation that Jei mentioned would make the king appear weaker, less sure of himself, then his comic equivalent's persona. Or at least that's how I interpret it.
