The fact is now renders are getting so good its unbeleiveable. The comment about the first render of the nice looking women.... droool ... ahem... in 10 years time I can see games getting to that detail. Just look at FF advent children and FF spirits within. Especially spirits within which was made 6 years ago!!! Technology has improved more from then. computers are getting more powerfull, graphics software and rendering engines more advanced. Add to that now the gaming booths in japan where a 3D image of you is taken and you can play with yourself (steady ) in certain games. soon there could be a fully detailed rendered computer generated image of yourself that you can make play any character in any game or even film!! who knows what will happen in the next 10-15 years.
Damn, we're not far off from no longer needing live actors for movies, huh?
Um... Without some astounding advances in AI, all those beautiful life like computer generated "life-like" characters are just fancy puppets. Fine acting is still firmly in the human domain; CG animated films is really just another form of a marionette show. ^_^ (The second Ghost in the Shell movie is a great example.)
AFAIK, computer "acting" is limited mostly to hordes or flocks, like the background fightings in Lord of the Rings or the huge group movements in Antz. Not to say they do not have emotional impacts, but we're not getting Gollum's performance out of AI's just yet.
I wonder if it would lead to superstar actors who look, well, no more appealing than myself, since no one would ever actually need to look at them. Or, would this lead to a legion of superstar artists who can creator characters more visually attractive than any real(ly plastically enhanced) human beings. ^_^;

Lots of real actors you see on screen or often not real actors too but you just don't notice them. Like all the little guys in Night at the Museums. Those are 90% digitals. Rythm and Hue were showing their models and renders last night at my college and they are so real o_O;
