    Re: Table Top RPGs

I used to play Champions, Star Wars, D&D, AD&D, had a few of the White Wolf games but never got in to them really (the Vampire and the Werewolf one, can't recall the names offhand), to name a few. Hell I even had an Indiana Jones roleplaying game. I also played some Warhammer Fantasy Battle, which although is not really a table top roleplaying game, I think it is similar.

Champions was the favorite among my friends because we were all into comic books.

Funny I saw this thread, because I about to start playing some table top RPGs with some friends. I think they are trying all kinds of stuff to see which they like best and are playing several different Gurps games now.

I don't think I have ever played any of these games with females, but I agree with the alone part. I think I have been longing to do some more stuff with people that are right in front of me, and I think games like this allow for more imagination

I actually have just bought the Warhammer Fantasy Battles book and I am in the process of building an army to play others at my local hobby shop (I can't wait)

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy playing FFXI sometimes, I just want to branch out a little right now.

      Re: Table Top RPGs

If I had a real life gaming group that I could hang out with in person, I'd stop playing MMOs right now. But I don't, so I make do.

BRP - My 2nd Edition Love probably does have something to do with nostalgia. It was what my friends and I played the most during our RPing heyday. I've played original D&D and AD&D and the D20 system, and like them all reasonably well. I can still remember most of the rules for 2nd Edition though, so it's clearly more ingrained in my mind.

        Re: Table Top RPGs

It's very hard to pull a group together, even if you don't play an out of print version of the game (like me). If I didn't organize my groups online, I would not have played in about 7-8 years now, I think.

But luckily for me, I don't mind playing online. In fact, I kind of prefer it. I find it easier to interact with characters when you don't see the players' faces. But that's just me.

As for why I play 2E, I don't think I can rightly say it's nostalgia, because that implies I at one point left 2E and then returned to it. I never left it. I refused to spend any more money on books when 3E came out (and later, 3.5E) because as far as I was concerned, if it's not broken, don't fix it. I know some people will argue that, but I am steadfast in my opinion.

There are other reasons, of course, but I do not want to inadvertantly turn this into yet another 2E/3E thread, so I will not disclose them.

Actually, that makes complete sense. 2nd Edition worked perfectly fine. There wasn't really any reason to upgrade if you were happy with what you were already playing.

I've checked out various online D&D groups, but have never gotten into it. I wouldn't be averse to it, but I think it loses something of the atmosphere. But that's maybe just me.

            Re: Table Top RPGs

Once I get the weapon skill system and magic system done, I'll be willing to actually host a Vana'diel Iron Heroes game on this site... if you don't have "Iron Heroes"... cough, I can let you borrow my PDF, cough.

That's after the weapon skill system and magic system are done, so awhile.

Hmm, closest I can think was a board game like RPG. Think it was called Dragon Heros or something. Don't remember hardly played it mostly because I could hardly find people intrested in it.

Went to MUDs, MOOs, Console RPGs, and then MMORPGs.

Board games are nothing like tabletop RPGs.

Sorry maybe a dumb question... how do you play a table top RPG online? Back when I was heavily into table top RPGs I didn't know what the internet was

                    Re: Table Top RPGs

Well, a lot of people will use forum pbps or pbems (play by post and play by email, respectively). But I find these to be too slow, really. I set up a chatroom using a special program called OpenRPG (it's free and found at www.openrpg.com) that allows me to open up a chat and even set a password to it.

Using my forums (simple little proboards--they serve my purpose), my players and I communicate with each other. It's also how I deliever XP, make announcements, and so forth. Then, once a week (usually), we all meet at a designated time and date in the chat and start playing.

I used to play D&D. Probably second edition rules too.
