If you wanted to do an interesting study, you could test people who had never played an MMO on economics, social skills, leadership skills, etc. Then, after a year, you could test them again, ask them to report their total play time, and see if there is a correlation in the results.

My opinion is that the statement that itiss an escape for menthal unhealthy, is very true. However i think itsnot the only escape, andi alsothink its not only an escape, but also a game. But you cant say MMORPG will do you good.

Many people who play MMO's at some point or another actually visit those players and have a rl experience (Get see how they act in rl, learn their behaviors, likes, and other stuff). Out of EQ I've had 36 such experiences and 1 of them being a developer of EQ. From FFXI I've had 8 so far.
For mostpeople this doesnt count, MMORPG can givebad and negative effects mostpeople dont realize ofthemselves in firstplace, butthey will later when looking back

Like the inability to type and/or proof read...
"how broken everything about ToAU is."
"Do you have Haruhi in your daily anime diet?"
"ok... I've quit 5 times... and failed each time miserably... they need a patch for FFXI like those nicotine ones...."
            "Finally Quit this game"

It's hard to know what you've gotten yourself into unless you can see it from the outside.
